There are very few things more stressful in travel than realising you need a visa in a week and the standard processing time is three. I've helped friends navigate urgent visa situations more times than I'd like — here is what I actually know about what works.
TL;DR — can you get a visa faster?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no, and often it depends on the destination and why you need it fast. Some countries have formal express or priority processing tracks with a higher fee. Others — like the US — simply do not have a commercial express track; they have emergency appointments, which are for genuine emergencies and are not easily granted. The Schengen zone has pilot programmes in some consulates for priority processing, but availability is limited. eVisa systems (India, Thailand, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Malaysia etc.) are genuinely fast — often 24–72 hours. Always verify processing times and express options on the official consulate or VFS site before booking flights.
The most common urgent visa scenarios — and what's actually possible
Scenario 1 — Medical emergency: A family member is ill abroad, or you need to travel for treatment. This is the strongest case for emergency processing. Consulates of most countries (US, UK, Schengen, Australia) have emergency appointment provisions for documented medical situations. You'll need a letter from the treating hospital, doctor or a medical authority explaining the urgency. These are not guaranteed but are more likely to be accommodated than business-trip urgency.
Scenario 2 — Sudden business travel: Invitation letter from a foreign company arrived last week, travel is next week. Many consulates do have a business/corporate track that is slightly faster. UK's Standard Visitor visa and several Schengen consulates (France, Germany) have 'priority service' options through VFS for an extra fee — processing in 3–5 working days rather than 15. Book the priority appointment as soon as the invitation is confirmed.
Scenario 3 — Family event (wedding, bereavement): Similar to the medical scenario in terms of grounds for emergency. Carry documentation: a wedding invitation on official letterhead, or a death certificate for bereavement. Most consulates will consider these on a case-by-case basis — you call the consulate directly, explain, and ask for an emergency appointment.
Scenario 4 — Just booked a spontaneous trip: This is the hardest case. If you simply impulsively booked a trip to a Schengen country for next week without a visa, there is no reliable way to shortcut the process. Express processing fees buy you faster processing once your application is complete and at the consulate — they do not bypass the queue or guarantee approval. Plan ahead.
Which countries have formal priority/express visa tracks?
As of early 2026, the following have publicly available faster tracks — but fees and timelines vary by city and change periodically, so verify on VFS or the consulate site:
- UK Standard Visitor Visa: VFS India offers a 'Priority Service' (roughly 5 working days) and a 'Super Priority Service' (next working day, available at select centres in major cities). These cost extra — budget an additional ₹15,000–₹30,000 roughly above the standard visa fee. The service is available at booking — select it during the VFS appointment booking flow. Availability is limited.
- Schengen (France, Germany, Netherlands, Italy): Several consulates offer priority processing through VFS for an additional fee. Processing can be 3–7 working days with priority, vs. 15 working days standard. Book the VFS appointment early and select the priority option if available. Not all Schengen consulates in all Indian cities offer this — check the specific consulate's VFS page.
- Canada: IRCC does not have a formal pay-for-express track for tourist visas. Processing times are published online and updated regularly — they have ranged from 3 weeks to several months depending on the application centre. The only escalation route is genuine humanitarian or compassionate grounds.
- USA: No commercial express track. Emergency appointments (for genuine medical/bereavement situations) require an online application explaining the emergency and are discretionary. Routine business travel is not grounds for an emergency appointment. US visa wait times at Indian consulates have been notoriously long (months, in some cities in peak periods) — apply as early as possible.
- Australia: Some visa subclasses are processed faster than others. The eVisitor and ETA are not available for Indian passports, but the Visitor Visa (subclass 600) is processed fully online via ImmiAccount and has no formal priority track — just variable processing times depending on how complete your application is.
- eVisa countries (Turkey, Sri Lanka, Malaysia, Kenya, Rwanda etc.): These are inherently fast — most eVisas process in 24–72 hours, some instantly. The application is entirely online. Check the official eVisa portal of the destination country.
How to prepare documents faster when time is tight
The processing clock starts when the consulate has a complete application. Incomplete applications are returned or held — which burns your limited time. When you are in a hurry:
- Bank statements: Get a 3-month or 6-month statement from net banking immediately. If you need an attested/original from the bank, call the branch manager and explain the urgency — most scheduled banks can do same-day attested statements at the branch.
- ITR or Form 16: Digital copies from the income tax portal are accepted at most consulates. No need to wait for a physical document.
- Hotel booking and flight itinerary: Use a dummy ticket service (see our guide to dummy tickets for visa applications) rather than booking refundable flights and hotels at inflated last-minute prices. For the visa application stage, a confirmed-looking itinerary is what the consulate wants — not an actual non-refundable booking.
- Insurance: Several travel insurance providers offer instant digital policies. This is one of the faster documents to get.
- Passport: If your passport has less than 6 months validity, you cannot shortcut passport renewal — Passport Seva typically takes 1–2 weeks even with Tatkaal. This is the most common reason last-minute visa applications fail.
What about using a visa agency or consultant?
Visa consultants and agencies can help in a few genuine ways: they know which consulates in which cities have shorter appointment wait times, they can cross-check your documents for completeness before submission (reducing the chance of a return or rejection), and for some Schengen applications they can file via corporate channels that have faster slots.
What they cannot do: get you a US or Canada visa faster than the system allows, or guarantee approval. If an agency promises to 'get you a visa in 3 days' for countries with 15-day processing and no priority track, that is a red flag. Legitimate agents are honest about timelines.
Agency fees vary widely — budget ₹3,000–₹15,000 for document assistance and application support for a standard Schengen or UK visa, depending on the agency and city. Avoid agencies who ask for large upfront fees before your appointment is confirmed.
Honest truths about urgent visa situations
Here is the part most travel sites don't say clearly enough: for some country-visa combinations, there is no fast track, and if you don't have enough lead time, you're not going on the trip. A US visa from India can take months for a routine tourist application in some periods. If you get that project invitation in March and the conference is in April, the timeline may simply not work — no amount of express fees or agency help changes that.
For business travellers who regularly visit a specific country, the single best thing you can do for urgent-travel-readiness is: get your next visa while you still have time. A multi-entry 5-year Schengen visa, or a 10-year US visa, means you're never in the urgent-processing queue again. Apply for renewal a few months before expiry, not the day after it runs out.
