Patna to Ranchi same-day flight: when it actually makes sense — and when it does not

Patna to Ranchi is 45 minutes airborne — one of the shortest commercial flights in India. But the bus journey is 7–9 hours, the train is even longer, and on a last-minute booking the flight might cost ₹8,000. So: when does flying actually make sense here?
TL;DR — the short answer
Patna (PAT) to Ranchi (IXR) is typically served by IndiGo with 1–2 daily departures. The flight is around 45 minutes, but with airport overhead added, the total journey is 3–4 hours door to door. The bus is 7–9 hours on the National Highway, the train longer still. Last-minute fares typically run ₹5,000–₹12,000 depending on timing and demand. Flying makes sense if you value time over money, have a same-day commitment in Ranchi, or the bus is already sold out. It does not make sense if you are on a tight budget and the trip is not urgent — the highway journey, while long, is perfectly manageable on a decent AC bus.
How thin is this route — and what flights actually exist?
This is what I would call a 'thin route' — limited frequency, one or two carriers, and the economics are driven mainly by business travellers and government officials shuttling between the two state capitals. IndiGo is the primary operator and typically runs 1–2 daily round trips. Air India has operated this route intermittently, but check the current schedule — connectivity has varied. SpiceJet has had on-and-off presence here over the years.
The thin frequency is both the route's weakness and its value: because there are fewer departures, same-day options are limited, but the demand from people who really need to fly is consistent. Patna is Bihar's capital; Ranchi is Jharkhand's. Government transfers, court dates, medical referrals, business meetings — the reasons people need to move urgently between these two cities are real.
Before you book, verify the current schedule on IndiGo.com or via FlightGPT — on a 1–2 daily frequency route, a cancellation or a sold-out flight means your next option is tomorrow.
What does last-minute pricing look like on a thin route?
Last-minute pricing on low-frequency routes works a little differently from busy corridors like Delhi–Mumbai. On a thick route, airlines can price more aggressively last-minute because there are multiple flights that day and they can afford to yield-manage across departures. On a thin 1–2 frequency route like Patna–Ranchi, the airline knows that if you are booking same-day, you have very few alternatives — so prices can be proportionally steep.
In practice, fares I have observed on last-minute bookings on this route:
- 6–12 hours before departure: Often ₹9,000–₹13,000+ for economy on IndiGo. At this price, the calculus versus the bus is mostly about time.
- 12–24 hours out: ₹6,000–₹10,000 is more typical. Still a significant premium over the advance booking price, but less painful.
- 24–48 hours out: If there is spare inventory, fares can dip to ₹4,000–₹7,000 on IndiGo. This is where the flight starts looking reasonable if your time is worth anything.
Remember that IndiGo base fares often exclude check-in baggage. For a quick same-day trip with just a cabin bag, the base fare is what you pay. If you need to check a bag, add ₹700–₹1,000 to your mental number.
The bus and train alternatives — honest comparison
The Patna–Ranchi road journey runs via NH333 (the older route) or portions of the newer highway. In good conditions, AC buses (RSRTC or private operators like Shyamoli) take around 7–8 hours. In monsoon or on a Friday evening, it can stretch to 9–10 hours. This is entirely liveable for non-urgent travel — the highway passes through some pleasant Jharkhand forest stretches — but it is a full day's journey.
Train options are more limited: the Patna–Ranchi route does not have a direct express with great frequency. You would typically need to take a train via Gomoh or change at Gaya or Hazaribagh. Journey times are 8–10 hours minimum for most options. Tatkal availability last-minute in sleeper and AC classes is genuinely unpredictable on these connections.
Bottom line: if you are booking 24+ hours ahead, the bus is a perfectly reasonable choice for most travellers. If you need to be in Ranchi by afternoon the same day and it is already morning, the flight is probably your only real option.
When flying genuinely makes no sense on this route
I have a slight contrarian view here: for budget travellers, Patna–Ranchi is one of the routes where the flight is often not worth the premium unless the trip is urgent. Here is why:
- The door-to-door time saving over the bus is only about 4–5 hours — not the 15+ hour saving you get on, say, Delhi–Guwahati.
- The cost premium at last-minute prices (₹9,000+ vs ₹400–₹800 for a bus) is steep in relation to the time saved.
- Both Patna and Ranchi have non-central airports — Lok Nayak Jayaprakash Airport (PAT) is about 7 km from Patna city but ground transport can be slow; Birsa Munda Airport (IXR) in Ranchi is about 6–7 km from the city centre. Neither is walking distance from anything.
That said, for a ₹8,000 trip that lets you attend a same-day meeting, medical appointment or family event you would otherwise miss entirely — the flight wins easily. Context is everything on thin routes.
Practical booking tips for PAT–IXR
If you have decided to fly:
- Book on IndiGo.com or the IndiGo app directly. On a 1–2 daily frequency route, OTA inventory can lag. Check the airline's own site first.
- Check both PAT–IXR and any connecting options via Kolkata. Sometimes a PAT–CCU–IXR routing via Kolkata is comparable in price and has more seats available, though travel time increases significantly.
- Confirm the return. If you need to come back same day, the thin frequency means a sold-out return flight is a genuine risk. Always have a backup plan (bus booking, hotel contact in Ranchi) if you are going same-day return.
- Arrive early. Patna airport can have longer-than-expected security queues. Give yourself at least 75–90 minutes before departure on a domestic flight, even for web check-in with cabin baggage only.

Frequently asked questions
Does IndiGo fly directly from Patna to Ranchi?
Yes, IndiGo typically operates 1–2 daily direct flights on the PAT–IXR route. Air India has operated this route intermittently. Verify the current schedule on IndiGo.com or via FlightGPT, as frequency can change seasonally.
How long does the Patna to Ranchi flight take?
Around 45 minutes airborne. With airport check-in, security and transfers at both ends, total door-to-door journey time from central Patna to central Ranchi is typically 3–4 hours.
What are realistic last-minute fares on Patna–Ranchi?
Booking 12–24 hours out, expect roughly ₹6,000–₹10,000 for a one-way economy seat on IndiGo with cabin baggage only. Within 6 hours of departure, prices can reach ₹12,000 or more if seats are scarce. Verify on IndiGo.com for the current price.
Is the bus from Patna to Ranchi reliable?
Yes — AC buses run by RSRTC and private operators like Shyamoli take 7–9 hours under normal conditions. In monsoon or on holiday weekends, add 1–2 hours. Tickets are much cheaper than the flight (typically under ₹1,000 for AC), and booking through Redbus or similar apps usually works for next-day or same-day if seats are available.
What if the only flight is full?
Your fallback is the bus or a connecting routing via Kolkata (PAT–CCU–IXR). A CCU connection adds 4–5 hours to travel time but can open up more seat availability. Check IndiGo and Air India separately — sold out on one does not mean sold out on both.
Is there a direct train from Patna to Ranchi?
Direct train options are limited and typically take 8–10+ hours depending on the routing (often via Gomoh or Hazaribagh). Same-day tatkal berth availability in AC classes is unpredictable. Check IRCTC for current train options and tatkal availability.
