Bir Billing is India's paragliding capital, but the sport has world-class sites from Nepal to Turkey. Here is where Indian paragliding enthusiasts should fly — and how to get there.
Quick answer
Bir Billing in Himachal Pradesh is the best paragliding site in India and one of the top sites globally — host of the 2015 Paragliding World Cup. Tandem flights cost INR 2,500 to INR 4,000, and the site is accessible from Delhi via Dharamshala. Internationally, Pokhara (Nepal) offers stunning Annapurna views, Oludeniz (Turkey) is famous for its Blue Lagoon landing, and Interlaken (Switzerland) is the iconic Alpine flying experience.
Bir Billing — India's paragliding capital
Bir Billing in Kangra district, Himachal Pradesh, is a world-class paragliding site. The launch site at Billing (2,400 metres) overlooks the Kangra Valley, and the landing zone at Bir (1,500 metres) gives a flight of 15 to 25 minutes with a height difference of roughly 900 metres. The site has excellent thermals and consistent wind conditions from March to June and September to November.
Tandem flights (you fly with a certified pilot) cost INR 2,500 to INR 4,000 including a GoPro video. If you want to learn solo paragliding, courses (P1/P2 certification) run 7 to 15 days and cost INR 15,000 to INR 35,000 depending on the school and level. Several schools in Bir offer internationally recognised BHPA or APPI certifications.
Getting there: the nearest airport is Dharamshala (Gaggal Airport), with direct flights from Delhi. From Dharamshala, Bir is roughly 1 to 1.5 hours by road. Alternatively, take an overnight bus from Delhi to Bir directly (roughly 12 hours). The season overlaps well with the Tibetan monastery and cafe culture in Bir, making it an excellent combined adventure-and-culture weekend.
Pokhara, Nepal — flying over the Annapurnas
Pokhara is Nepal's adventure capital, and paragliding here means flying with the Annapurna range as your backdrop. The launch site at Sarangkot (1,600 metres) overlooks Phewa Lake, and the standard flight is 20 to 30 minutes with a landing by the lakeside. Conditions are best from October to December and March to May.
Tandem flights cost NPR 7,000 to NPR 12,000 (INR 4,300 to INR 7,500 at current rates), which is more expensive than Bir Billing but the Himalayan panorama is incomparable. Cross-country flights and acrobatic tandem flights are available for experienced flyers at higher rates.
Getting there: fly to Kathmandu and take a domestic flight to Pokhara (25 minutes) or a tourist bus (6 to 7 hours). Pokhara's new international airport may have direct flights from Indian cities — check current schedules. No visa fee for Indians.
Oludeniz, Turkey — the Blue Lagoon flight
Oludeniz on Turkey's Turquoise Coast is one of the world's most photographed paragliding sites. The launch from Babadag Mountain (1,960 metres) and the landing on the beach beside the Blue Lagoon is a 25 to 45 minute flight over turquoise Mediterranean water. Flights cost roughly EUR 100 to EUR 150 (INR 9,000 to INR 14,000) including photos and video.
Getting there: fly to Dalaman Airport from Indian cities via Istanbul (Turkish Airlines offers excellent connectivity from Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai). Indians get an e-visa for Turkey (USD 50, quick online process). Oludeniz is a 1.5-hour drive from Dalaman Airport. The flying season is April to November, with June to September being peak.
The honest appeal of Oludeniz is the scenery — the flying itself is not technically more interesting than Bir Billing, but the Mediterranean coastline, the Blue Lagoon landing and the overall setting make it a bucket-list flight.
Other international paragliding destinations
Interlaken, Switzerland: the classic Alpine paragliding experience. Tandem flights cost CHF 170 to CHF 220 (INR 16,000 to INR 20,000) for a 15 to 20 minute flight over the Jungfrau region. Requires a Schengen visa for Indians. Fly to Zurich and take a 2-hour train.
Medellin, Colombia: one of the cheapest international paragliding destinations (flights from USD 40 to USD 70). However, Colombia requires a visa for Indians and the routing is complex (via Europe or the US).
Cape Town, South Africa: paragliding over Signal Hill and Lion's Head with Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean below. Flights cost ZAR 1,500 to ZAR 2,500 (INR 6,700 to INR 11,000). South Africa requires a consular visa for Indians.
For Indian travellers looking for the best value-to-experience ratio, the ranking is: Bir Billing (cheapest, world-class), Pokhara (slightly more expensive, better mountain views), Oludeniz (moderate cost, unique coastal setting), Interlaken (expensive but iconic).
Safety and what to know before your first flight
Tandem paragliding with a certified pilot is statistically very safe — safer than driving on Indian highways, by the data. However, safety depends entirely on the operator. Choose pilots certified by recognised bodies (BHPA, APPI, or the Indian equivalent), check for adequate insurance coverage, and never fly with an operator who launches in unsuitable weather conditions.
What to wear: closed-toe shoes (trekking shoes are ideal), long trousers, a windproof jacket, sunglasses with a strap, and sunscreen. You do not need any prior experience for a tandem flight — the pilot handles everything. Your only job during launch is to run downhill when told to run.
