Addis Ababa travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Addis Ababa is Ethiopia's sprawling, high-altitude capital (2,355 m), the diplomatic heart of Africa (home to the African Union headquarters), and the hub of Ethiopian Airlines — Africa's largest airline. For Indian travellers, Addis is the entry point to one of the most distinctive countries on the continent: the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela, the ancient stelae of Axum, the volcanic Danakil Depression, the Omo Valley tribes and one of the world's great coffee cultures (Ethiopia is the birthplace of coffee). The city itself offers museums housing Lucy the 3.2-million-year-old hominid, lively jazz nights, and a deeply spiritual Orthodox Christian heritage.

About Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa was founded in 1886 by Emperor Menelik II and is one of the highest capital cities in the world. Its altitude gives it a remarkably pleasant year-round climate — daytime highs are typically 20-25°C with cool evenings, regardless of season. The city is a patchwork: Soviet-era boulevards from Ethiopia's socialist Derg period, a colourful mosaic of new Chinese-built high-rises, sprawling slums, and increasingly hipster cafe districts.
For Indian visitors, Addis is more challenging than Nairobi — less English in everyday settings, a less-developed tourist infrastructure, and infrastructure that can be patchy. But this is also what makes it rewarding. The Indian community in Ethiopia is small but growing (largely in textiles, manufacturing and IT), and a few Indian restaurants exist in Bole and around the main hotels. Carry cash; ATM and card acceptance is improving but inconsistent.
Best time to visit
The best window is October to March, Ethiopia's dry season — sunny days, cool nights, clear skies and perfect conditions for trekking the Simien Mountains, exploring Lalibela and visiting the Omo Valley. December-February is peak.
January 7 (Genna, Ethiopian Christmas) and January 19 (Timkat, Epiphany) are major religious celebrations — Timkat in Lalibela or Gondar is one of the most spectacular festivals in the world, with processions, white-robed pilgrims and ceremonial blessings of water.
June to September is the main rainy season (kremt) — daily afternoon downpours, but lush green landscapes and dramatic skies. Some northern roads become difficult. Lalibela and Addis remain visitable but trekking is hampered. The high altitude means temperatures stay moderate year-round — pack layers always.
Top things to do
National Museum of Ethiopia — home to "Lucy" (Australopithecus afarensis), the 3.2-million-year-old hominid skeleton that reshaped our understanding of human origins.
Holy Trinity Cathedral — the most important Ethiopian Orthodox cathedral, with the tombs of Emperor Haile Selassie and his family.
Mercato — the largest open-air market in Africa, sprawling, chaotic and fascinating. Go with a local guide and watch your belongings.
Entoto Hill — drive up to 3,200 m above the city for panoramic views, the original imperial church, and pine forests where Menelik's capital was first founded.
Ethnological Museum — set in Haile Selassie's palace, an outstanding introduction to Ethiopia's ethnic mosaic.
Traditional coffee ceremony — sit through the full roasting-grinding-brewing ritual at any local cafe. Tomoca and Galani are famous Addis coffee houses.
Day/onward trips: Lalibela's rock-hewn churches (1h flight), Gondar's castles, Axum's stelae, Bahir Dar and Lake Tana's island monasteries, the Simien Mountains for trekking, the Danakil Depression's sulfur volcanoes, and the cultural tribes of the Omo Valley. These all require flying or long drives — Ethiopia is huge.
How to get there — flights from India
Ethiopian Airlines is the dominant carrier, with extensive direct flights from India and an unmatched onward network across Africa. Typical corridors:
Chennai and Hyderabad also see direct Ethiopian flights some seasons. Round-trip fares run ₹30,000-55,000, often the cheapest direct option to Africa. Ethiopian Airlines also offers a free 1-2 night Addis stopover programme if your onward flight is more than 8 hours later — excellent value if you're continuing to East/South Africa.
Visa for Indian passport holders
Indians can get a visa-on-arrival at Addis Ababa airport for USD 50 (30-day single entry) or USD 70 (90-day single entry). Bring USD cash, a confirmed return ticket and hotel booking.
The smarter, more reliable option is the eVisa at evisa.gov.et — USD 52 for 30 days, USD 72 for 90 days, processed in 1-3 business days. Apply before flying to avoid airport queues. Print your eVisa approval.
CRITICAL: A Yellow Fever vaccination certificate is mandatory for Indians entering Ethiopia (because India is on the yellow fever risk list). Get vaccinated at least 10 days before travel at authorised centres in India (Safdarjung in Delhi, KEM in Mumbai, etc.); the certificate is valid for life. Carry it in your hand baggage. Live updates are in the Visas guide.
Where to stay
Bole — the airport-adjacent area and main business/diplomatic district. International hotels (Sheraton Addis, Hyatt Regency, Marriott Executive, Radisson Blu), shopping malls, embassies and the highest concentration of restaurants and cafes. Most first-time visitors stay here.
Kazanchis — central, with the African Union headquarters, UN ECA, government buildings and several mid-range hotels. Walking distance to museums.
Piazza — older Italian-influenced quarter with character but fewer good hotels.
Cape Verde / Old Airport area — quieter residential zone with guesthouses.
Budget hotels and guesthouses start ₹2,500/night, 4-star mid-range ₹6,500-10,000, the Sheraton and Hyatt run ₹16,000+. Indian options in Addis include Sangam, Saffron and a few smaller restaurants — somewhat limited compared to Nairobi. Ethiopian cuisine is naturally vegetarian-friendly during Orthodox fasting periods (Wednesday and Friday, plus 200+ fasting days a year) — injera with multiple veggie stews is delicious. Tap water is not safe; drink bottled.
