Amritsar travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Amritsar — the spiritual capital of Sikhism and home of the Golden Temple — is one of India's most rewarding short city breaks. The Harmandir Sahib at dawn, the powerful Wagah Border ceremony at sunset, the sobering memorial at Jallianwala Bagh and an unmatched Punjabi food scene make a 2-3 day trip feel deeply complete. About Amritsar
Amritsar (literally 'pool of nectar') was founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh Guru, Ram Das, around the sacred Amrit Sarovar tank. His successor Guru Arjan built the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) at its centre and installed the Adi Granth, the first compilation of Sikh scripture. The city grew as a centre of trade and faith, and was the site of the Jallianwala Bagh massacre in 1919 — a turning point in India's freedom struggle.
Today Amritsar is a city of around 1.5 million people, the most-visited religious tourism site in India (the Golden Temple receives more daily visitors than the Taj Mahal). Outside the walled old city around Harmandir Sahib, the city extends in a grid with Lawrence Road and Mall Road as the modern commercial arteries. The Wagah-Attari border with Pakistan is 30 km away — the daily Beating Retreat ceremony at sunset is a powerful evening experience.
Best time to visit Amritsar
October to March is the best window — Punjabi winters bring fog and chilly mornings (5-10C) but pleasant 15-25C days, perfect for walking around the Golden Temple and exploring. November-January brings festive vibes (Guru Nanak Jayanti, Christmas, Lohri, Maghi); the city is at its liveliest. March is Hola Mohalla and the Punjab harvest season.
April sees Baisakhi (the founding day of the Khalsa) — the Golden Temple gets unbelievably crowded but the energy is incredible. May-June is brutally hot (40-45C), only consider if pilgrimage is essential. July-September is monsoon with humid 30-35C days; the temple and city look beautiful after rain but plan around showers. Wagah ceremony is held year-round; arrive 90 minutes early in peak season for seating.
Top things to do in Amritsar
Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) — visit at multiple times of day: dawn (4-5 am) for the Palki Sahib procession bringing the Guru Granth Sahib from Akal Takht to Harmandir Sahib; sunset for the lit-up gilded reflection in the sarovar; late night (10.30 pm in winter, 11 pm in summer) for the closing Palki Sahib procession back to Akal Takht. Free entry; cover your head, remove shoes (free deposit), and wade through the foot-washing channel.
Langar at Harmandir Sahib — the world's largest free community kitchen feeds around 75,000-100,000 people daily. Volunteer for an hour washing dishes or rolling rotis — it's the spirit of seva at its finest.
Jallianwala Bagh — the memorial to the 1919 massacre when General Dyer ordered troops to fire on a peaceful gathering. The bullet-marked walls and martyr's well are deeply moving. Adjacent to the Golden Temple.
Wagah Border ceremony — daily Beating Retreat at sunset (around 5.15 pm winter, 6.15 pm summer). Reach by 4.30 pm. Carry an ID for the VIP enclosure (Indian passport).
Partition Museum at Town Hall — the world's first museum dedicated to Partition, with powerful oral histories and artefacts.
Other: Durgiana Temple (Hindu temple inspired by Harmandir Sahib's architecture), Gobindgarh Fort (sound-and-light show in the evening), Maharaja Ranjit Singh Museum, and old-city walks through Hall Bazaar and Katra Jaimal Singh.

Local food, culture, practical tips
Amritsari food is non-negotiable. Try Amritsari kulcha at Kulcha Land, Monu Kulcha or Bharawan Da Dhaba; Amritsari fish (only in season Nov-March) at Makhan Fish or Surjit Food Plaza; chole bhature at Kanha Sweets or Brothers' Dhaba; kesar pista phirni and jalebis at Gurdas Ram Jalebi Wala; the iconic lassi at Ahuja Lassi or Gian Chand Lassi Wala. The legendary Kesar Da Dhaba in the old city serves a thali that has barely changed in 100 years.
Cover your head (cloth available free at the entrance) and remove shoes inside the Golden Temple complex. Photography of the sarovar and the gilded inner sanctum is restricted in places; ask before clicking. Smoking, alcohol and meat are banned in the complex. The kara prasad is offered to all visitors free; receive it with both hands. Cycle rickshaws and e-rickshaws are best for old city navigation; Ola/Uber work in the modern parts. For Wagah, group taxis from Heritage Street cost 200-400 rupees per person round-trip.
