Coorg travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Coorg (officially Kodagu) is a hill district in Karnataka's Western Ghats, known as the Scotland of India for its rolling mist-covered coffee and cardamom plantations, cool climate and fierce warrior heritage — the Kodava people have produced more military officers per capita than any other community in India. Madikeri is the main town; most visitors base themselves at a plantation resort in the surrounding hills and explore the waterfalls, elephant camp, Buddhist monastery and walking trails at leisure.

About Coorg
Coorg covers about 4,102 sq km and produces around 30% of India's coffee output — you will smell the roasting beans before you see the first plantation. The main crops are Arabica and Robusta coffee, cardamom, pepper and orange. The landscape of rolling plantation hills with silver oak shade trees, mist-filled valleys and fast-flowing rivers (Cauvery rises at Talacauvery, 48 km from Madikeri) is strikingly beautiful year-round.
Madikeri is a compact hill town with a fort, a market selling fresh coffee and spices, and the old Omkareshwara temple at its centre. Most resorts are spread across the Kushalnagar (Bylakuppe area) to Madikeri to Virajpet corridor — about 60 km of winding plantation road. The Kodava community maintains a distinct culture — their traditional dress (the Kodava sari for women, the kupya kurga coat for men), unique coorgi cuisine, and festivals like Kailpodhu (weapon worship) and Puthari (harvest) differentiate Coorg sharply from the Karnataka plains.
Best time to visit Coorg
October to February is the finest season — the southwest monsoon has ended, coffee berries are ripening, the air is cool (15–22°C) and crisp, waterfalls are still flowing well from residual moisture and the forests are green. The coffee harvest (November–February) is a wonderful time to visit plantations and watch or participate in picking and processing. March to May is warmer (20–28°C) but still comfortable compared to coastal Karnataka; the Western Ghats forests flower and the Cauvery river is clear enough for kayaking.
June to September is the southwest monsoon — heavy, persistent rain, leeches on the forest paths and roads becoming slippery. Abbey Falls and other waterfalls are spectacular but access can be dangerous. Some resorts and homestays stay open through monsoon for those who love the moody atmosphere; others close in July–August.
Top things to do in Coorg
Coffee plantation tour — most plantation resorts and homestays offer guided tours of their own estates. You learn the difference between Arabica and Robusta, see wet and dry processing, and can buy estate-grown coffee directly at better prices than shops. Tata Coffee's Pollibetta and Balmaadi estates also offer day tours (book in advance).
Namdroling Monastery (Golden Temple) — at Bylakuppe, 60 km from Madikeri near Kushalnagar, this is the largest Nyingmapa Tibetan Buddhist settlement outside Tibet. The Namdroling Monastery's main shrine (Zangdog Palri) is a six-storey golden temple containing three of the largest gilded Buddha statues in Asia. Entry is free; visits are best in the morning or late afternoon when monks are in prayer.
Dubare Elephant Camp — on the Cauvery river bank, 35 km from Madikeri. The Forest Department camp allows visitors to bathe, feed and interact with Karnataka Forest Department elephants in the morning session (8–10 am). Entry ₹500–1,000, book ahead. Elephant safaris into the forest are also available.
Abbey Falls — a pretty 70-foot waterfall 6 km from Madikeri, surrounded by coffee and spice plantation. Best from October to January. Entry ₹30; get there before 10 am to beat tour groups.
Raja's Seat — a hilltop garden in Madikeri town, formerly the evening retreat of Kodagu kings, with a panoramic valley view at sunset. Entry ₹30; toy train for children operates on the grounds. Combine with Madikeri Fort (Tipu Sultan's modification of an older Kodava fort) and the Omkareshwara Temple.
Trekking — the Tadiandamol Peak trek (1,748 m, 8 km return from Kakkabe base, 4–5 hours) is the most popular overnight trek in Coorg. The Brahmagiri Peak trek (in Kodagu district near Iruppu Falls) is equally scenic. Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary has guided wildlife treks.
How to get there — flights and road
By air: The two practical airports are Mangalore (IXE, 150 km, 3.5 h by road) and Mysore (MYQ, 95 km, 2.5 h). Mangalore has direct flights from Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Hyderabad and Gulf cities; IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet all operate this route. Taxis from Mangalore airport to Coorg (Madikeri or surrounding resorts) cost ₹2,500–3,500. Alternatively, Bangalore's Kempegowda International Airport (BLR) is 250 km (5 h by road) and has the most flight options.
By road from Bangalore: 250 km via Mysore or via NH 275 Expressway — 5–6 hours. The last 50 km on the Madikeri ghat section (from Kushalnagar onwards) is winding mountain road requiring a careful driver. KSRTC air-conditioned overnight buses from Bangalore's Satellite Bus Stand run direct to Madikeri (₹600–900, 7 h).
By road from Mangalore: 150 km, 3–4 hours through the Ghats via Sakleshpur or Virajpet — excellent driving scenery.
Where to stay in Coorg
Coorg is best experienced as a plantation or nature stay rather than a city hotel. The range is exceptional:
Luxury plantation resorts — Taj Madikeri Resort & Spa (₹18,000–35,000), Orange County Resort (all-villa, ₹20,000–40,000), Evolve Back Coorg (₹25,000–50,000). All surrounded by plantation or forest, with infinity pools and Coorgi cuisine. Book 4–6 weeks ahead in October–February.
Mid-range homestays — the finest Coorg experience at a fraction of the luxury resort price is a family-run Kodava homestay. Kathekar House, Rainforest Retreat (organic farm, very popular), Misty Woods are well-reviewed at ₹4,000–10,000 per night including all meals. Home-cooked Coorgi food (pandi curry, kadambuttu rice dumplings, bamboo-shoot curry) is superb.
Budget — Madikeri town has guesthouses from ₹1,500–3,000. Less atmospheric than plantation stays but practical for independent travellers exploring by local bus.
Local food, culture, practical tips
Coorgi cuisine is distinctive and meat-heavy — the signature dish is pandi curry (pork curry cooked with kachampuli, a local Coorg vinegar made from the Garcinia fruit, which gives it a sour-smoky depth). Other specialties are kadambuttu (steamed rice dumplings), noolputtu (string hoppers), akki roti (rice pancake) and baimbale curry (bamboo shoot). Most homestays and plantation resorts serve full Coorgi menus; Coorg Cuisine restaurant in Madikeri is a good standalone option.
Coorg produces excellent coffee — Robusta from lower-altitude estates is robust and perfect for filter coffee; the Arabica from higher estates is more nuanced. Buy directly from estates or from the Cauvery Coffee outlet in Madikeri for fair prices. Wildlife note: the Pushpagiri, Brahmagiri and Nagarhole areas bordering Coorg have elephants, leopards and gaur — do not drive after dark on the Virajpet–Kutta road. ATMs in Madikeri and Kushalnagar; mobile coverage patchy on the plantation roads (BSNL works best on Ghat roads).
Frequently asked questions
Is Coorg good in monsoon?
Coorg gets very heavy rain June–September (one of India's wettest regions). Waterfalls are spectacular, the plantation is lush, and rates are low. But leeches are everywhere on forest walks, roads can flood, and many outdoor activities are suspended. It suits travellers who love the rain; avoid if you need sunshine.
Can I visit Dubare Elephant Camp without pre-booking?
Walk-ins are sometimes possible on weekdays, but weekends and school holidays fill up fast. Book online through the Jungle Lodges and Resorts Karnataka website at least 1 week in advance. The morning session (8–10 am) is the main activity window.
How many days are enough for Coorg?
Two nights and three days covers the core — Abbey Falls, Raja's Seat, Namdroling Monastery, a plantation tour and Dubare. Add a fourth day for a Tadiandamol trek or river activity.
What is the best base in Coorg — Madikeri or Kushalnagar?
Madikeri is centrally located for most attractions and has the most guesthouses and restaurants. Kushalnagar (near Bylakuppe) suits those coming from Bangalore or Mysore side and gives quick access to Namdroling Monastery. Many plantation resorts are between the two on the Kushalnagar–Madikeri road.
Are there direct flights to Coorg?
Coorg has no airport. The most convenient airports are Mangalore (IXE, 150 km, 3.5 h) with direct flights from Mumbai, Bangalore and Gulf cities, and Mysore (MYQ, 95 km, 2.5 h) with flights from Bangalore and a few other cities. Bangalore (BLR, 250 km, 5 h) has the most flight options.
