Corbett travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Jim Corbett National Park — established in 1936 as India's first national park, originally named Hailey — is the original home of Project Tiger (1973) and one of the most biodiverse parks in Asia. Spread across 521 sq km in Uttarakhand's Kumaon foothills along the Ramganga river, Corbett protects a magnificent mix of Himalayan foothills, sal forest, riverine grasslands and wetlands that supports tigers, elephants, leopards, gharials, mugger crocodiles and 600+ bird species. The park is named for legendary hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, who killed nine man-eating tigers and three man-eating leopards in these forests.

About Corbett
The Corbett Tiger Reserve — which includes the national park plus surrounding buffer zones — covers 1,318 sq km. The park is divided into five main tourism zones: Dhikala (most famous, grassland and Ramganga reservoir, overnight stay permits), Bijrani (mixed forest, most accessible, day visits), Jhirna (open year-round, good for leopard and sloth bear), Durga Devi (birding specialist, northeastern entrance) and Sitabani (buffer zone, open year-round, no tiger-zone permit needed). The Ramganga reservoir at Dhikala is the visual centrepiece — hundreds of elephants, deer and birds gather at the water's edge while mugger crocodiles bask on the banks.
Jim Corbett himself — the Irish-Kumaoni naturalist and author — spent much of his life in these forests. His books (The Man-Eaters of Kumaon, The Man-Eating Leopard of Rudraprayag) remain among the finest wildlife writing ever produced by an Indian writer. His house in Kaladhungi (25 km from Ramnagar) is now a museum.
Best time to visit Corbett
November to February is the best season for birds (600+ species, including wintering waterfowl) and for comfortable weather. Dhikala is accessible from November 15. Elephant herds descend from the higher Himalayan forests as temperatures drop — the grasslands around the Ramganga reservoir are spectacular. March to June is the peak tiger season — vegetation thins, water concentrates at the reservoir and tigers are seen resting near waterholes in the afternoon heat. April–June is the best window for tiger photography, though temperatures can reach 38–42°C. July to October: Dhikala is closed July 1–October 15. Bijrani closes July–September. Jhirna and Sitabani stay open year-round. The monsoon forest is beautiful but wildlife is dispersed and difficult to spot.
Safari zones and booking
Dhikala Zone — the premier experience. Requires an overnight stay at the Dhikala Forest Rest House (booked through Uttarakhand Tourism or directly, 45 days–3 months ahead) or the luxury tented Dhikala camp. Entry at 11 am, exit next morning at 6 am. The grasslands (chaur) at dawn are the most celebrated wildlife scenery in Corbett. Day entry to Dhikala is also possible (₹150 permit fee for Indians, plus gypsy hire) but overnight stays give access to the best dawn and dusk hours.
Bijrani Zone — most accessible from Ramnagar (16 km). Good mix of sal forest and grassland, high tiger density, open for day safaris Oct–June. Gypsy/canter booking through the Corbett online portal (corbettonline.uk.gov.in).
Jhirna Zone — open year-round, famous for leopards, sloth bears and elephants. 16 km from Ramnagar in the southern buffer zone. Good for monsoon visits.
All safaris must be booked online at corbettonline.uk.gov.in — 45-day advance window for Indian nationals. Gypsies (6-seater 4WDs) cost ₹4,000–6,000 per vehicle including zone fees. Canters (open bus) are available in some zones at ₹1,000–1,500 per person.
How to get there — flights and road
By air: Pantnagar Airport (PGH) is 80 km from Ramnagar (2 hours by road). Air India and IndiGo fly from Delhi (45 min). Taxis from Pantnagar to Ramnagar/Corbett resorts cost ₹1,800–2,500. Delhi's IGI Airport is 260 km (5–6 hours by road) — many visitors combine a day at Delhi with an overnight drive.
By road from Delhi: 260 km via NH 9 (Moradabad) then right at Kashipur towards Ramnagar — approximately 5–6 hours. The road is good to Ramnagar; resort access roads vary from tarmac to gravel track. UPSRTC buses from Anand Vihar ISBT go directly to Ramnagar (₹350–500, 7 h).
By train: Ramnagar Station (RMR) is the main access point, connected directly to Delhi by the Ranikhet Express (overnight, 7h) and other services from Kathgodam and Haldwani (change required from Lucknow/Mumbai direction). Most Corbett resorts provide pickup from Ramnagar station.
Where to stay in Corbett
Luxury lodges — Jim's Jungle Retreat, Aahana (₹15,000–30,000), Taj Corbett Resort & Spa (₹18,000–35,000). These include naturalist guides, jeep safaris and excellent wildlife briefings. Dhikala Eco Cabins (Forest Dept, inside Dhikala zone, must book months ahead) are spartan but unbeatable for the experience.
Mid-range — Quality Inn Corbett Jungle Resort, Corbett Machaan (tree house rooms, ₹5,000–12,000), Riverview Retreat near Corbett Ramnagar. Several good resorts on the Dhikuli–Marchula road.
Budget — Ramnagar town has guesthouses from ₹1,200–3,000. KMVN tourist bungalows (Kumaon Mandal Vikas Nigam) at Ramnagar, Dhikuli and Khinanauli offer clean budget rooms at ₹1,500–3,000.
Local food, culture, practical tips
Most Corbett visitors eat at their resort — standalone restaurants outside the park boundary are basic. Ramnagar market has good North Indian dhabas. Kumaoni food (bhatt ki churkani — black bean curry, gahat dal, kafuli spinach, aloo ke gutke — spiced mountain potatoes) is found at a few homestays and local restaurants.
Key tips: Carry a good telephoto lens (300mm minimum), binoculars, hat, sunblock and insect repellent. Silence inside the park is important — switch phones to silent mode. Do not lean out of gypsies. Elephant encounters are common; follow guide instructions. The Ramganga river has mugger crocodiles — do not wade into the river at any point. Ramnagar's ATMs can run dry on busy weekends — carry sufficient cash. Mobile coverage is limited inside the park (BSNL works in some areas). The Jim Corbett Museum in Kaladhungi is worth a 1-hour visit.
Frequently asked questions
How do I book a Dhikala zone overnight stay?
Book online at corbettonline.uk.gov.in up to 45 days in advance for Indian nationals. Dhikala Forest Rest House accommodation (dorms and private rooms) is booked separately through Uttarakhand Tourism (kmvn.gov.in). The combination sells out quickly — book both as soon as the window opens.
What is the difference between Dhikala and Bijrani zones?
Dhikala is the larger, more famous grassland zone with overnight stays and the Ramganga reservoir — best for elephants, large herds and panoramic wildlife scenes. Bijrani is closer to Ramnagar, mixed forest habitat, excellent tiger density and open for day visits — easier to access.
Is Corbett good for first-time wildlife visitors?
Yes — Corbett is one of India's most visitor-friendly parks. Wildlife is abundant (you are almost guaranteed elephant sightings and likely to see deer, langurs, otters and crocodiles even if tigers are elusive). The well-maintained roads and professional guides make it an excellent introduction to Indian wildlife tourism.
Can I see tigers in Corbett?
Yes, but sighting rates are lower than Ranthambore as Corbett's dense forest means tigers are harder to spot. Best odds are in Bijrani and Dhikala zones in April–June when vegetation thins. Overall sighting rate is estimated at 30–50% per safari. Multiple safaris across 2 nights significantly improve chances.
What else is there to do near Corbett?
The Corbett Museum in Kaladhungi (25 km, Jim Corbett's winter home), Garjiya Devi Temple (16 km, on a rocky island in the Kosi river), Corbett Falls (25 km from Ramnagar), the Sunrise Point at Dhikuli, and Nainital Lake (60 km) are all within easy reach.
