Johannesburg travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Johannesburg (Joburg or Jozi to locals) is South Africa's largest city, economic powerhouse, and the main international gateway to the country's legendary safari and wine experiences. For Indian travellers it is a city of immense historical significance — South Africa's 1.5 million-strong Indian community is the largest outside of India, descended from indentured labourers brought to Natal in the 1860s and from the "passenger Indians" (mostly Gujarati traders) who followed. Mahatma Gandhi spent 21 formative years here, developing satyagraha at the Phoenix Settlement near Durban and at Tolstoy Farm in Johannesburg. Joburg combines this layered history (Apartheid Museum, Soweto, Constitution Hill) with modern dining and shopping, and serves as the launching point for Kruger National Park safaris.

About Johannesburg
Johannesburg was founded in 1886 after the discovery of gold on the Witwatersrand reef, and grew within a generation into the wealthiest city in Africa. Today, at over 1,750 m elevation, it's a city of 6 million in the metro area, spread across distinct neighbourhoods: the regenerating downtown (Maboneng, Newtown), the leafy northern suburbs (Sandton, Rosebank, Houghton, Melville), and the historic township of Soweto in the southwest.
South Africa's Indian community is most concentrated in KwaZulu-Natal (Durban has nearly a million Indians) but Johannesburg has a substantial community in Lenasia, Laudium and Fordsburg. The Fordsburg Square area is a vibrant Indian quarter with restaurants, shops and the bustling Saturday night Fordsburg Square market — one of the best Indian street-food experiences outside India. Cultural ties run deep: Mahatma Gandhi practised law on Rissik Street, Tolstoy Farm (his ashram) is preserved as a heritage site, and Indian Independence Day is widely celebrated.
Security is a real concern in Joburg — petty crime is high, vehicle hijackings happen in some areas. Stick to recommended neighbourhoods, use Uber, never walk in the CBD after dark, and follow your hotel's advice.
Best time to visit
The best window for safaris is the dry winter season May to October — cooler weather (5-22°C in Joburg, slightly warmer in Kruger), sparse vegetation makes wildlife easier to spot, and animals concentrate around water sources. June-August is peak safari season; book lodges 6-12 months ahead.
For Joburg city visits, year-round is fine — winters (June-August) are sunny but chilly evenings (often near freezing), summers (November-March) are warm (18-28°C) with afternoon thunderstorms. The famous Johannesburg highveld lightning storms in summer are spectacular.
Wildflower season in Namaqualand (western South Africa) is August-September. Cape Town and the Garden Route are best November-April. Avoid the South African school holidays (mid-December to mid-January, Easter) when domestic tourism spikes prices and crowds the parks.
Top things to do
Apartheid Museum — one of the most powerful museums in the world. Allow 3-4 hours. Tickets allocate visitors to "White" or "Non-White" entrances to simulate the apartheid experience.
Soweto — South West Townships, home to over a million people. Guided tours visit the Hector Pieterson Museum (commemorating the 1976 student uprising), Vilakazi Street (the only street to have housed two Nobel laureates — Mandela and Tutu), and end with a traditional shisa nyama (barbeque) lunch.
Constitution Hill — former prison complex where Gandhi, Mandela and thousands of political prisoners were held, now home to the Constitutional Court. Guided tours combine apartheid-era prison ruins with the new constitutional democracy.
Cradle of Humankind — UNESCO World Heritage site 1 hour from the city, with the Maropeng visitor centre and Sterkfontein caves where early hominid fossils have been excavated.
Mahatma Gandhi sites — Tolstoy Farm in the south of the city (preserved as a museum), and the Old Fort at Constitution Hill where Gandhi was imprisoned.
Fordsburg Square (Saturday night market) — Indian street food, samosas, biryani, chaat and a buzzing diaspora atmosphere.
Onward to Kruger National Park — Joburg is the launch point. Fly to Skukuza, Hoedspruit or Nelspruit (1h), or drive 4-5h to the southern gates. The 19,485 sq km park is one of the world's great game-viewing destinations — the Big Five plus over 500 bird species.
How to get there — flights from India
South African Airways, Air India and IndiGo have operated direct flights at various times; check current operations. Otherwise 1-stop options via the Gulf and Addis Ababa are standard. Typical corridors:
Round-trip fares run ₹50,000-95,000. Ethiopian via Addis is often cheapest; Emirates and Qatar offer the best premium-cabin schedules. Always check baggage allowances carefully — South African Airways and most African carriers operate at standard 23 kg, but multi-stop itineraries can have surprises.
Visa for Indian passport holders
Indians need a pre-arranged tourist visa for South Africa. The eVisa system has been rolling out — apply via VFS Global (vfsglobal.com/southafrica) in your nearest city (Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Hyderabad and others). Fee around ZAR 1,425 plus VFS service charge, total around ₹6,500-7,500. Processing 5-15 working days.
Required documents: passport with two blank pages (validity 30+ days beyond intended stay), confirmed return ticket, hotel bookings, bank statements (last 3 months), income tax returns, employer letter / business proof, travel insurance, photographs.
South Africa has launched a Trusted Tour Operator Scheme (TTOS) with select Indian tour operators — bookings through accredited operators get fast-tracked visa processing.
Yellow Fever: NOT required for direct travel from India to South Africa. However, if you transit through a yellow-fever country (Kenya, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Nigeria), the certificate IS required. Most Indians transit via Addis Ababa or East Africa, so it is strongly recommended to get vaccinated anyway. Live updates are in the Visas guide.

Budget hotels and guesthouses start ₹3,500/night, 4-star mid-range ₹7,000-13,000, luxury ₹18,000+. Vegetarian Indian options are abundant in Fordsburg, Mayfair and Sandton — Bismillah Restaurant, Pavilion (Sandton), Akhalwaya's, Saigon House. Halal food is widely available given the large Indian and Cape Malay Muslim communities. Tap water is safe in Joburg.
