Mexico City travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages

For Indian travellers it is reachable in 22-26 hours with a 1-stop and offers excellent value once you arrive — though the US-visa cascade matters for the routing.

About Mexico City
Mexico City sits at 2,240 m altitude in the Valley of Mexico, built on the ruins of Tenochtitlan, the great Aztec capital that the Spanish conquered in 1521. The Centro Historico — the largest historic centre in the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage Site — is built directly atop the Aztec city; the colonial cathedral sits on the Templo Mayor. The metro area is one of the world's largest, around 22 million people in CDMX and surrounding municipalities.
Indian visitors are uncommon (a few thousand annually) but the city is increasingly popular for adventure travellers, food enthusiasts and US-based Indian families taking weekend hops. The Indian community in Mexico is tiny (~5,000), mostly diplomats, IT engineers and a handful of restaurateurs. There is no Indian neighbourhood, but you will find a small cluster of Indian restaurants — Tandoor (Polanco), Restaurante Hindu (Roma Norte), Bombay Beirut (Roma Norte) — and a Sri Sri Radha Madan Mohan ISKCON temple in Coyoacan.
Best time to visit
Mexico City has a mild high-altitude climate, with cool nights year-round. The best windows are March-May (18-26°C days, drier weather, blooming jacarandas in late March) and October-November (15-23°C, post-rainy season clear skies, Day of the Dead 1-2 November is a magical time to visit).
June-September is the rainy season — most days see afternoon thunderstorms but mornings are usually clear; hotel prices are lowest. December-February is cool (16-22°C days, 6-10°C nights) and dry; popular with North American visitors. Note the altitude — drink lots of water, ease into walking and avoid heavy exercise on day one. Indian travellers love the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos) parade in early November.
Top things to do
Zocalo (Plaza de la Constitucion) — the massive central square, with the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace (Diego Rivera murals inside, free with passport ID) and the Templo Mayor Aztec ruins.
Frida Kahlo Museum (Casa Azul) in Coyoacan — Frida's blue childhood home, now a museum of her work and personal effects. Book online weeks ahead; this sells out daily.
Teotihuacan Pyramids day trip (50 km northeast) — climb the Pyramid of the Sun (when open) and Pyramid of the Moon; one of the great archaeological sites of the world. Hot-air balloon flights at sunrise are popular.
National Museum of Anthropology in Chapultepec Park — the world's greatest pre-Columbian collection; the Aztec Sun Stone is here.
Chapultepec Castle — hilltop former imperial residence with sweeping city views.
Palacio de Bellas Artes — art nouveau opera house with Diego Rivera and David Siqueiros murals.
Xochimilco — colourful flat-bottomed trajinera boats on ancient Aztec canals, mariachi music and tequila on board.
Coyoacan and San Angel — bohemian neighbourhoods with cobbled streets, plazas and weekend markets.
Lucha Libre at Arena Mexico — Mexican wrestling, a brilliant spectacle.
Food tour — tacos al pastor at El Huequito, mole at Pujol or Contramar, chiles en nogada in season.
How to get there — flights from India
Mexico City has no non-stop flights from India. All routes require at least one stop, typically via the US East Coast, Europe or the Gulf.
Typical return fares: ₹95,000-1,40,000 in shoulder months, ₹1,75,000-2,30,000 around Christmas/Day of the Dead. Important: if your routing goes through the US (e.g. Newark, Houston, LA), you need a US B1/B2 visa even for the transit. Routing via DXB or LHR avoids the US-visa requirement if you don't have one.
Visa for Indian passport holders
Mexico offers Indians two options: (1) Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA / SAE) — if you hold a valid visa to the US, Canada, UK, Japan or any Schengen country, OR are a permanent resident of one of those, you can apply for the free Mexican eTA online at sae.inami.gob.mx; approval typically in minutes to hours. Valid for 30-day stays, multiple-entry within visa validity. (2) Full Mexican visitor visa — if you have none of the above, apply at the Mexican Embassy (New Delhi) or Consulate (Mumbai) with travel itinerary, hotel bookings, bank statements (3 months), employment letter and income proof. Fee about USD 50. Processing 5-10 working days. Most Indian travellers use the eTA route via their existing US visa — strongly recommended. Full process in the Visas guide.
Where to stay
Roma Norte / Condesa — leafy, hip neighbourhoods with great food, boutique hotels and walkable streets. Hotel Carlota, Casa Decu, Brick Hotel. USD 120-220.
Polanco — upscale area; embassies, fine dining (Pujol, Quintonil), shopping. Four Seasons, Las Alcobas, JW Marriott. USD 250-450.
Centro Historico — heart of the city, walking distance to Zocalo, Cathedral, Templo Mayor. Gran Hotel Ciudad de Mexico, Hampton Inn Centro Historico. USD 100-200. Safer by day; use Uber at night.
Coyoacan — quieter, Frida Kahlo's neighbourhood; charming boutique stays. USD 90-180.
Near the airport (MEX) — only for short layovers; Camino Real Aeropuerto, NH Mexico City Aeropuerto.
Budget guidance
Mexico City is excellent value compared to the US. Per person per day, excluding flights and visa:
- Budget: ₹3,000-6,500 (hostel or 3-star, street food tacos and tamales, metro)
- Mid-range: ₹8,000-16,000 (boutique hotel in Roma/Condesa, mix of street food and restaurants, museums, Teotihuacan day trip)
- Premium: ₹20,000-45,000+ (Four Seasons or St Regis Polanco, fine dining at Pujol or Quintonil, private guide)
Mexico City Metro is cheap (MXN 5/ride ≈ ₹25), but very crowded at rush hour. Uber is safe, abundant and very affordable (MXN 80-200 for most cross-city rides). Don't use street taxis from random kerbs. Tipping 10-15% expected in restaurants. Bottled water only; tap water is not safe. The altitude can cause headaches and breathlessness for the first 24-48 hours.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Mexico?
Indians with a valid US, Canada, UK, Japan or Schengen visa (or PR) can apply free online for the Mexican eTA (SAE) at sae.inami.gob.mx — approval in minutes-hours. Those without any of these need a full Mexican visa from the embassy in Delhi or consulate in Mumbai (USD 50, 5-10 working days).
How long is the flight from India to Mexico City?
There are no non-stop flights. Total journey is 22-28 hours via 1-stop options: through Europe (London, Frankfurt, Paris), the Gulf (Dubai, Doha) or the US East Coast (Newark, Houston). Routing via the US requires a valid US transit visa.
Is Mexico City safe for Indian tourists?
Tourist areas like Roma Norte, Condesa, Polanco, Coyoacan and the Centro Historico (by day) are generally safe with normal big-city caution. Avoid Iztapalapa, Tepito and the city outskirts. Use Uber, not street taxis. Don't flash expensive jewellery or phones.
When is the Day of the Dead in Mexico City?
Dia de los Muertos is 1-2 November, with the famous Mega Parade typically the Saturday before. Hotels fill weeks ahead. The cemeteries (Mixquic, Xochimilco) come alive at night with candles and marigolds — a deeply moving experience.
Can vegetarian and Jain travellers eat in Mexico City?
Yes — Mexican cuisine has many veg-friendly options (cheese quesadillas, bean tlacoyos, nopal cactus tacos, mole verde, frijoles), plus a small but solid Indian restaurant scene (Tandoor in Polanco, Restaurante Hindu in Roma Norte). Always confirm "sin carne, sin pollo, sin manteca de cerdo" (no meat/chicken/pork lard). Jains should stick to identifiable veg dishes and bring their own asafoetida-equivalent.
