Nainital travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Nainital is Uttarakhand's most popular lake hill station, built around the emerald Naini Lake at 2,084 metres in the Kumaon Himalaya. The town is flanked by seven hills (Saptashring) — Naina, Deopatha, Handi Bandi, Cheena/China, Ayarpatha, Lariya Kanta and Sher Ka Danda — giving it an amphitheatre feel with the lake at the centre and the Mall Road running along its northern bank. Nainital makes an excellent base for exploring Jim Corbett National Park (60 km), Bhimtal, Sattal and the broader Kumaon region.

About Nainital
Nainital was discovered by the British in 1841 when a Mr Barron from Shahjahanpur stumbled upon the lake. Within two years a small European settlement had formed; by 1846 it was established as a hill station and in 1862 became the summer capital of the North-Western Provinces (later the United Provinces). The colonial legacy is visible in the churches (St John in the Wilderness, St Francis School), courthouses and the Raj-era bungalows on the surrounding hills.
The Naini Lake is the centrepiece — a freshwater lake fed by natural springs, 1.5 km long and 0.5 km wide, with a distinct drop at the deep Sher Ka Danda end. The Naini Devi Temple on the northern shore is built on the spot where Sati's left eye (naini) is believed to have fallen — making Nainital one of the 51 Shakti Peethas. Boating on the lake is one of the primary activities; rowing boats and motor launches can be hired from the Mallital boathouse.
Best time to visit Nainital
March to June is peak season — pleasant temperatures (10–25°C), long days, and the town is fully active. May is the busiest month; booking hotels 3–4 weeks ahead is essential. October is arguably the finest single month — post-monsoon clarity gives the best Himalayan views from Snow View, the lake is at its cleanest, and crowds have thinned after school holidays end. November sees temperatures drop sharply (below 5°C at night) but is still beautiful and clear.
December to February is cold (0–10°C) with frequent frost and occasional snowfall. The lake freezes in harsh winters. Many hotels and restaurants reduce operations. The Nainital Climate Festival takes place in February, drawing visitors for snow. July–September is monsoon — heavy rain, landslides on the approach roads (especially the Delhi–Nainital NH 9) and the lake overflows. Not recommended for first visits.
Top things to do in Nainital
Boating on Naini Lake — hire a rowing boat (₹150–250 per 30 min) or motorboat (₹250–400) from the Mallital boathouse. The standard circuit takes 45–60 minutes and passes the Naini Devi Temple ghat, the boat club and the Tallital boathouse. Early mornings (6–8 am) the lake is still and reflect the surrounding hills beautifully.
Snow View Ropeway — a cable car from Mallital rises to Snow View Point (2,270 m), with panoramic views of the Nanda Devi, Trishul and Nanda Kot peaks on clear days (October–November best). The ropeway costs ₹200–250 return; the Snow View platform has telescopes and a cafe. Walking up via the 1 km forest trail is a pleasant option.
Mall Road (Thandi Sadak) — the lakeside promenade is pedestrianised 7 pm–11 pm (and always at Mallital end). It is lined with shops, bakeries, the municipal library and the colonial-era Raj Bhawan-style buildings. The evening light on the lake and the mist rolling down from Cheena Peak is very atmospheric.
Cheena Peak (China Peak) hike — the highest point accessible from Nainital (2,611 m) is a 4 km walk from Mallital. The panoramic view of the Kumaon peaks and the Terai plains below is worth the 1.5-hour climb. Horse hire is available for the ascent (₹300–500).
Eco Cave Garden and Butterfly Research Centre — a network of natural limestone caves (₹50 entry) near Mall Road that children enjoy. The Butterfly Research Centre nearby has a beautiful butterfly house (₹50).
Day trips — Bhimtal (22 km, larger lake, aquarium on an island), Sattal (27 km, seven interconnected lakes, birdwatching), Mukteshwar (51 km, great Himalayan panorama from the 2,286 m Mukteshwar Temple ridge), and Jim Corbett National Park (60 km, tiger safaris Oct–June).
How to get there — flights and road

Where to stay in Nainital
Luxury — The Naini Retreat (panoramic lake views, colonial-style, ₹10,000–20,000), Manu Maharani Resort (forest-facing, ₹8,000–15,000), Swiss Hotel (lake-facing heritage). These fill up weeks ahead in May–June.
Mid-range — Hotel Vikram Vintage Inn, Alka Hotel (on the lake, good value), Hotel Mount View (₹3,000–7,000). Most decent mid-range properties are on the Mall Road or its hillside roads overlooking the lake.

Local food, culture, practical tips
Nainital is famous for its homemade candles (Nainital Candles, Est. 1940s), quality woolen garments and the local Bal Mithai (brown fudge-like sweet coated in white sugar balls) and Singori (khoya in a maalu leaf cone). The lake-front shops sell these alongside the usual souvenir paraphernalia. For food, Machan restaurant (above Ziqitza House on Mall Road) is praised for Kumaoni thali and wood-fired pizza; Sakley's Restaurant (1930s, on Mall Road) for continental comfort food; and the roti-sabzi street food stalls near Tallital bus stand are excellent value.
Peak season (May–June) sees massive weekend crowds from Delhi NCR — traffic jams into Nainital can extend 15 km down the hill on Friday evenings. Consider arriving Thursday evening or on a weekday. The municipal government imposes vehicle entry limits on peak days. Carry warm clothing even in summer evenings. Mobile coverage is good (Jio, Airtel). ATMs on Mall Road.
