Nice travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Nice is the capital of the French Riviera (Côte d'Azur) and one of the most glamorous cities in Europe — a sweep of Mediterranean seafront promenade, pastel-hued Italian-influenced alleyways, world-class art museums, and the glamour of Monaco just 30 minutes away by train. For Indian travellers Nice is an excellent Schengen base: the airport is well-connected to Middle East hubs, the old town (Vieux-Nice) recalls Genoa and Liguria in its architecture (Nice was Italian until 1860), and the surrounding villages — Eze, Antibes, Menton, Èze-sur-Mer — are among the most beautiful small towns in France.

About Nice
Nice (pronounced "neece" in English, "nees" in French) sits at the foot of the Maritime Alps where they meet the Mediterranean, on the wide arc of the Baie des Anges (Bay of Angels). With a population of about 345,000, it is France's fifth-largest city and the capital of the Alpes-Maritimes département. The city has a double identity: it is both classically French — with elegant Belle Époque boulevards, excellent food markets and a proud Niçois cuisine (socca flatbread, pan bagnat, salade niçoise) — and distinctly Italian in its DNA, having been part of the Kingdom of Sardinia until 1860 and ethnically and linguistically Ligurian for centuries before that.
The Promenade des Anglais — the 7km seafront boulevard — was built in 1820 with funding from the English winter colony that had made Nice their Mediterranean retreat. It remains one of Europe's great urban promenades: lined with palm trees, grand hotels (including the legendary Hôtel Negresco), cycle paths and a wide public beach. The Mediterranean here turns a luminous deep blue-green in summer (the Côte d'Azur takes its name from exactly this colour) and the light that attracted Matisse, Chagall, Picasso and Renoir to the Riviera is real and remarkable.
For Indian travellers, Nice offers more bang-for-rupee than Paris or Monaco while remaining well-connected via GVA Geneva and CDG Paris. The French Riviera has an established tourism infrastructure and English is readily spoken in the tourist zones. Several Indian restaurants operate in the Libération market area and near the train station.
Best time to visit Nice
May and June are the finest months for first-time visitors — sea is warming up (reaching 20°C by June), the famous Cannes Film Festival is nearby in May (about 30km west; hotel prices in Nice spike during Cannes festival week), and the lavender fields in the Var hinterland start blooming in June. Crowds and prices are lower than July-August.
July and August — peak Riviera summer. The sea is warm (24-26°C), beach clubs are packed, and Nice's famous Jazz Festival (July) fills the seafront and Cimiez Gardens. Hotel prices are at their highest; book months in advance. The crowds on the Promenade in July are substantial but manageable compared to, say, Venice or Rome. The Nice Carnival in February is a separate winter event unrelated to beach season.
September and October — the local secret. Sea temperature stays above 21°C through September, crowds thin dramatically after mid-September, and the Alpes-Maritimes hinterland (Gorges du Verdon, Moustiers-Sainte-Marie, the Route Napoléon) is at its most golden. Late October sees the Nice Jumping equestrian show and the Gastronomy Festival.
November to March — mild by Northern European standards (daytime highs 12-16°C, rarely cold) but not beach weather. The Carnival in February (two weeks of parades, flower floats and corsairs on the Promenade) is a major event. Winter hotel prices are significantly lower, and the lack of crowds makes Old Nice and the Chagall Museum far more enjoyable. A day trip to the snow line (Valberg or Auron ski resorts, 1h 30m from Nice) is feasible in January-February.
Top things to do in Nice
Promenade des Anglais — start any visit here. Walk or rent a bike for the full 7km from the airport end to the Port area at dawn or in the hour before sunset. The Belle Époque hotels, pebble beaches, old men playing pétanque and the extraordinary blue of the Mediterranean create a scene that justifies Nice's reputation. The public beaches (Plage Publique) are free; paid beach clubs with sunloungers and service run EUR 20-30 (~₹1,800-2,700) for a day bed.
Vieux-Nice (Old Town) — the tangle of narrow orange-and-ochre alleyways between the Promenade and the Port is the most visually arresting part of the city. The Baroque Cathédrale Sainte-Réparate, the flower and food market on Cours Saleya (daily except Monday morning when it becomes an antiques market), the Chapelle de la Miséricorde, and dozens of socca vendors and rosé wine bars fill this quarter. Best explored on foot between 8 am-noon for the market and after 5 pm for the aperitivo culture.
Castle Hill (Colline du Château) — the rocky promontory at the eastern end of the Promenade, topped by a 17th-century former citadel site (the castle itself was demolished in 1706 by Louis XIV), offers the finest view of Nice from above: the entire arc of the Baie des Anges, the terracotta roofscape of Vieux-Nice and the marina. Take the free lift from the seafront or climb the stairs (150 steps). A waterfall cascade and children's playground are at the top. Free.
Musée National Marc Chagall — built specifically to house Chagall's Biblical Message series (17 large canvases painted 1954-1967 in extraordinary blues, reds and greens), this is one of the most beautiful art museums in France. The garden, mosaic pool and intimate scale make it a genuine highlight even for non-art-specialists. EUR 10 (~₹900); free under 18. Take bus 15 from Place Masséna (15 min). Pre-book tickets online in summer.
Musée Matisse — in the Cimiez hill neighbourhood (bus 15 or 22), the Matisse Museum is housed in a 17th-century Genoese villa and displays drawings, paintings, bronzes and personal effects from Henri Matisse, who spent the last 37 years of his life in Nice. EUR 10 (~₹900). The Cimiez Monastery gardens behind the museum are free and peaceful.
Day trip to Monaco — Monaco is 30 minutes by train (TER regional, about EUR 3.80 one way, ~₹345) from Nice Ville station. The Principality of Monaco is the world's second-smallest state (2km²), home to the famous Casino de Monte-Carlo (free to walk the outer square and gardens, entry to the gaming rooms EUR 17+), the Prince's Palace (open to visitors July-October), the Oceanographic Museum (EUR 20, ~₹1,800) and the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix circuit which you can walk around any non-race day. No visa required for Monaco — it is inside the Schengen zone and uses the euro.
Eze village — the medieval perched village of Eze sits 427 metres above the sea on a cliff between Nice (25 min by train to Eze-sur-Mer then 40 min steep climb or taxi) and Monaco. The village is preserved as a living museum of medieval Provençal architecture with an exotic garden at the summit (EUR 7.50, ~₹680) that has arguably the finest coastal view on the Riviera. Fragonard Parfumerie has a free factory tour in the village.
Cours Saleya Market — the outdoor flower and produce market in the heart of Old Nice runs Tuesday-Sunday mornings. Stalls of cut flowers, local olive oils, Niçois specialties (tapenade, pissaladière, socca made on the spot in wood-fired ovens) and fresh vegetables. Buy socca (chickpea-flour flatbread, vegetarian, EUR 3-4 per portion) and a glass of rosé for a perfect Riviera breakfast.
How to get there — flights from India
Nice Côte d'Azur (NCE) is France's second-busiest airport after Paris CDG, well-served from Middle East hub airports — the primary connecting points for Indian travellers.
- Delhi to Nice — connect via Dubai (Emirates, ~12h total), Doha (Qatar Airways, ~11h 30m), Abu Dhabi (Etihad, ~12h), or Paris CDG (Air India non-stop DEL-CDG ~8h 30m, then TGV train from Paris to Nice 5h 40m or Air France domestic flight 1h 20m)
- Mumbai to Nice — connect via Dubai (Emirates, ~11h total), Doha (Qatar, ~11h), or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines, ~11h)
The most comfortable Indian routing is Emirates from Delhi or Mumbai via Dubai direct to Nice NCE (one stop, total ~12-13h). Qatar and Air France via Paris are good alternatives. Economy fares from Delhi to Nice run ₹42,000-90,000 one-way. A cheaper alternative is to fly into Marseille (MRS, 2h 30m by train to Nice) or Geneva (GVA, 3h 30m by train to Nice, changing at Lyon Part-Dieu) and travel by rail. Nice's airport to city centre: tram line 2 (T2) connects NCE Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 to central Nice and the train station in 30-40 minutes for EUR 1.70 (~₹155) — excellent value.
Where to stay in Nice
Vieux-Nice and Jean Médecin — staying inside or adjacent to the Old Town puts you within walking distance of the Cours Saleya market, the sea and the Promenade. Hotels here range from budget guesthouses (EUR 65-90, ~₹5,900-8,100) on the back alleys to the legendary Hôtel Negresco on the Promenade (EUR 450+, ~₹40,500+) for the full Belle Époque experience. Mid-range boutique hotels on Rue Masséna and surrounding streets cost EUR 100-160 (~₹9,000-14,400).
Around Nice Ville train station — the area within 400m of the central station is very convenient for day trips to Monaco, Eze and Cannes by TER train. Good density of mid-range hotels at EUR 80-140 (~₹7,200-12,600). The Libération neighbourhood (a 15-min walk north of the station) has the most local-feeling market and the best Indian restaurant strip in Nice.
Cimiez — the hilltop residential neighbourhood above the city where Matisse and Chagall both lived. Quieter, more residential, with the two major art museums. Hotels here are fewer but excellent value for a longer stay; bus or tram connects to the centre.
Promenade des Anglais hotels — mid-range chains (Ibis, Novotel, Mercure) and luxury independents (Boscolo Exedra, West End) line the promenade. Premium for the sea view; expect EUR 150-300 (~₹13,500-27,000) for a sea-facing room in summer. The sea-view experience at breakfast is worth the upgrade for at least one night.
Visa and practical tips for Indians
Schengen visa for France — Indians need a Type C Schengen short-stay visa for France, applied through VFS Global France at centres in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad and Chandigarh. The fee is EUR 90 (~₹8,100) plus VFS service charges. Required documents: confirmed flight reservations, hotel bookings for all nights, travel insurance (EUR 30,000 minimum), bank statements (3-6 months), ITRs, employer letter and a covering letter. France is one of the most popular Schengen application destinations for Indians and has a generally well-organised VFS process; typical processing time is 15-20 working days, rising to 6+ weeks in summer peak. Apply no later than 6 weeks before travel in peak season (June-August). A French Schengen visa also covers Monaco (no separate visa required), Italy, Spain, Germany and all other Schengen states. Full guidance at Visas guide.
Monaco practical note — Monaco is not in the EU but is a Schengen area participant using the euro. You enter and exit Monaco via France (and briefly Italy on the east side); there are no passport checks. Your French Schengen visa is valid for Monaco.
Getting around the Riviera — the TER regional train (SNCF) is the best way to travel along the coast. Single journeys: Nice to Monaco EUR 3.80 (~₹345), Nice to Cannes EUR 6.70 (~₹610), Nice to Antibes EUR 4.50 (~₹410). Trains run every 20-30 minutes on most routes. The Zou! bus network covers villages (including Eze village from Eze-sur-Mer, EUR 1.50, ~₹135) cheaply. Within Nice, the tram network (T1, T2, T3) covers the city for EUR 1.70 per journey or EUR 5 for a day pass.
Indian food in Nice — the Libération area (walk north of Nice Ville station, around Rue Vernier and Rue Assalit) has the best concentration of Indian, Pakistani and Bangladeshi restaurants in Nice. Restaurant Rajasthan, Passage Indien and several South Asian kebab houses serve reliable Indian food. Indian grocery stores on the same streets stock spices, basmati and frozen Indian items.
Currency and costs — Nice is moderately priced for France — significantly cheaper than Paris, and competitive with Lyon. A socca portion in Old Nice EUR 3-4; a sit-down lunch menu du jour EUR 15-22 (~₹1,350-2,000); a mid-range restaurant dinner EUR 30-45 (~₹2,700-4,050) per person with wine. Budget EUR 90-150 per day (~₹8,100-13,500) for mid-range travel.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Nice?
Yes — Indians need a Schengen short-stay (Type C) visa for France, applied through VFS Global France. The fee is EUR 90 plus VFS service charges; apply 4-6 weeks before travel (8 weeks in summer). A French Schengen visa also covers Monaco and all other Schengen countries.
How do I get from Nice to Monaco?
The TER regional train from Nice Ville to Monaco-Monte Carlo station runs every 20-30 minutes and takes 22 minutes. Cost is EUR 3.80 one way (~₹345). It is by far the easiest and cheapest option — no visa, no border check, and the train drops you right in Monte-Carlo.
How do I get from Nice airport to the city?
Tram Line 2 (T2) runs from both airport terminals to Nice Ville train station and Place Masséna in 30-40 minutes for EUR 1.70 (~₹155). Taxis to the city centre cost around EUR 25-35 (~₹2,250-3,150). The tram runs from approximately 5 am to midnight daily.
Is Nice better than Paris for a first-time visitor?
They are very different. Paris is the cultural heavyweight — Louvre, Eiffel Tower, world-class cuisine. Nice offers the Riviera experience: Mediterranean beaches, Vieux-Nice, Monaco, Côte d'Azur villages and sunshine. Many Indian tourists do Paris first and Nice on a second or third trip, or combine both on a 10-day France itinerary.
What is the best season for the Côte d'Azur?
May-June and September are ideal — sea warm enough to swim, crowds manageable, prices lower than July-August. July-August is peak season with the warmest sea (25°C) but highest prices and most crowded beaches. Spring (April-May) has cool sea but beautiful countryside, perfect for villages and museums.
