About Rishikesh
Rishikesh (also spelled Hrishikesh) is divided by the Ganga into two bank-sides connected by the iconic suspension bridges Ram Jhula and Laxman Jhula — both lined with temples, ashrams and chai stalls. The east bank (Swarg Ashram side) is quieter, pedestrian-only and dotted with yoga centres; the west bank (Muni Ki Reti side) has more hotels, the adventure operators and the roads. The two bridges were built in the 1930s and have become the visual symbol of the city, though the original Laxman Jhula was closed for repairs and a new pedestrian bridge opened nearby.
The Beatles connection is real — John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr stayed at Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's ashram (now called Chaurasi Kutia or Beatles Ashram) in February 1968, writing much of the White Album here. The ashram was abandoned by the 1990s and is now managed by the Forest Department as a heritage site, with their cabin walls covered in colourful murals by visiting artists. It is one of Rishikesh's most photographed spots.
Best time to visit Rishikesh
September to November is arguably the best window — the monsoon has cleared, the Ganga is full and green, the air is crisp and the ghats are not crowded. Rafting season reopens after the mandatory monsoon closure. February to June is the main tourist season — pleasant temperatures (15–35°C), Ganga still clear enough for rafting, and Holi and summer holidays drive large Indian crowds. Book accommodation well ahead for March–May weekends.
July and August are monsoon months — heavy rainfall causes flash floods and the rafting stretches are closed by the Uttarakhand government for safety. Several ashrams still operate yoga courses, but adventure activities are off. December to January is cold (5–15°C at day, near freezing at night) but perfectly clear and beautiful for ghats and temples; rafting sometimes operates on warmer days.
Top things to do in Rishikesh
White-water rafting on the Ganga — the 16 km Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch (Grade 2–3 rapids) is the standard run, taking 2–3 hours. More experienced paddlers can start at Marine Drive (26 km, Grade 3–4) or the longer Kaudiyala run (36 km, Grade 4). Operators cluster in Shivpuri and Tapovan; per-person prices range from ₹600–2,000 depending on distance. The season runs September to June.
Triveni Ghat aarti — every evening at sunset, priests perform the Ganga aarti with large brass lamps at the main bathing ghat. It is smaller and less theatrical than Varanasi but deeply atmospheric; arrive 30 minutes early to get a good spot.
Beatles Ashram (Chaurasi Kutia) — the abandoned ashram is now a Forest Department heritage site open to visitors (entry fee ₹150–600 depending on nationality). The meditation domes, beehive-shaped pyramids and mural-covered walls make for extraordinary photography.
Bungee jumping and high-adrenaline activities — Jumpin Heights at Mohan Chatti (53 km from Rishikesh town) operates a 83 m bungee — the highest in India — plus a 520 m Flying Fox zip-line and a Giant Swing. Prices: ₹3,550 for bungee. Booking in advance recommended on weekends.
Yoga and meditation — Parmarth Niketan, Sivananda Ashram and dozens of smaller centres offer short courses (1–7 days) on pranayama, asana and meditation. Drop-in classes available at many centres from ₹300–800 per session. The International Yoga Festival in March draws instructors from across the world.
Camping and trekking — Shivpuri is the main base for overnight camping by the river (packages from ₹1,500 including tent, dinner and bonfire). Treks to Kunjapuri Temple sunrise point (14 km, 4 h), Neer Garh Waterfall (3 km walk) and the longer Chopta-Tungnath-Chandrashila circuit are popular day or overnight options.
How to get there — flights and trains
By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant (DED) in Dehradun, 40 km from Rishikesh (about 1 hour by road). IndiGo, Air India and SpiceJet fly direct from Delhi (45 min), Mumbai (1h 55m) and Bangalore (2h 30m). Taxis from the airport to Rishikesh cost ₹700–900 by prepaid. Alternatively, many travellers fly to Delhi and take a road or rail transfer.
By train: Haridwar Junction (HW) is the nearest major railhead, 24 km from Rishikesh. It is on the main Delhi–Dehradun line — Shatabdi Express takes 4h 30m from Delhi, Jan Shatabdi 5h, overnight trains 7–8h. From Haridwar, shared autos and local buses to Rishikesh cost ₹30–60; taxis around ₹400. A Rishikesh Rly (RKSH) station also exists but receives fewer trains.
By road: Rishikesh is 230 km from Delhi — about 5–6 hours by car or UPSRTC/GMOU bus via NH 58 through Muzaffarnagar and Haridwar. Volvo and semi-deluxe buses depart from Kashmiri Gate ISBT Delhi hourly from early morning (₹400–700).
Where to stay in Rishikesh
Ashrams (budget to mid-range) — staying in an ashram is the classic Rishikesh experience. Parmarth Niketan (from ₹1,500 per night including meals and yoga sessions), Om Shanti Om Ashram, and Anand Prakash Ashram offer clean rooms with vegetarian meals. Foreigners and families are welcome.
River-facing hotels — the Swarg Ashram and Tapovan areas have numerous hotels facing the Ganga at 3,000–10,000 rupees per night. Hotel Surya Ganges, Hotel Bhandari Swiss Cottage and Shanti Guesthouse offer good value with river views.
Luxury and glamping — Aloha on the Ganges, Atali Ganga and Camp Ganga Kinare offer luxury tented or resort stays from ₹8,000–25,000 per night. Most include rafting, yoga and bonfire in the package.
Budget guesthouses — dozens of small guesthouses in Laxman Jhula and Ram Jhula areas from ₹600–2,000. High Season (March–June) fills up fast on weekends — book at least a week ahead.
Local food, culture, practical tips
Rishikesh is a holy city — meat, fish and eggs are banned citywide by municipal order, and alcohol is not sold (though some resorts outside municipal limits bend this for guests). The cafe culture is excellent: try Little Buddha Cafe, The 60s Cafe (near Beatles Ashram), Ganga View Cafe and Cafe Neem for Israeli-Indian fusion, wood-fired pizza and fresh juices. Chotiwala Restaurant near Swarg Ashram is legendary for its thali.
The main market areas of Laxman Jhula and Lakshman Jhula sell yoga mats, rudraksha beads, rudraksha malas, ayurvedic products and printed cotton clothing. Bargaining is expected. Carry cash as many ashrams and smaller operators do not accept cards. ATMs are available on the main roads of both bank-sides. Mobile coverage is good on Jio and Airtel. The ghat area can be crowded on Ram Navami, Mahashivratri and Ganga Dussehra — book well ahead if visiting during festivals.
Frequently asked questions
Is Rishikesh good for non-yogis?
Absolutely. Rafting, bungee jumping, trekking, camping and the evening aarti are all excellent for travellers who are not interested in yoga. Rishikesh is one of India's best adventure destinations.
Can you swim in the Ganga at Rishikesh?
Yes — the Ganga at Rishikesh is much cleaner than in downstream cities. Designated bathing ghats like Triveni Ghat and Ram Jhula ghat are safe for a dip; the current is strong so non-swimmers should stay near the banks.
What is the best rafting stretch for beginners?
The Shivpuri to Rishikesh stretch (16 km, Grade 2–3) is perfect for first-timers. It takes about 2.5 hours and costs ₹600–1,000 per person. The Marine Drive stretch (26 km) is better for those wanting more rapids.
How many days are enough for Rishikesh?
Two days covers the essentials — rafting on day one, aarti, Beatles Ashram and a yoga class on day two. Add a third night if you want to trek to Kunjapuri or do a longer multi-day rafting expedition.
What is the best way to reach Rishikesh from Delhi?
The fastest is fly to Dehradun (45 min) then taxi 40 km (1h). The most scenic is overnight train to Haridwar then a 40-minute road transfer. The most flexible is a self-drive via NH 58 taking 5–6 hours.
