Jeddah travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Jeddah is Saudi Arabia's Red Sea port city and the historic gateway for millions of Muslim pilgrims arriving for Umrah and Hajj — the holy cities of Mecca and Madinah lie just 85 km and 420 km away respectively. Beyond its religious significance, Jeddah is the country's most cosmopolitan city: a UNESCO-listed old town (Al-Balad), a 30 km Corniche along the Red Sea, world-class Red Sea diving, and a tourism scene that has opened up dramatically since Saudi Arabia introduced the e-Visa in 2019.

About Jeddah
Jeddah has been the maritime gateway to the Hijaz region for over 1,400 years — pilgrims arriving by sea would step off the dhow at Jeddah and travel inland to Mecca. The city retains a distinctive heritage in the coral-stone houses of Al-Balad, the UNESCO World Heritage old town, where centuries-old merchant homes with intricate wooden mashrabiya balconies have been beautifully restored.
Modern Jeddah is far more relaxed than Riyadh — the dress code is liberal by Saudi standards, women do not need to wear an abaya, men and women can dine together at restaurants and beaches, and entertainment events are held year-round. For Indian visitors, the Urdu and Hindi spoken everywhere by a huge South Asian community (Indians, Pakistanis, Bangladeshis) makes navigation effortless. Indian and Pakistani restaurants are abundant.
Best time to visit
The best window is November to March, with daytime temperatures around 22-28°C and pleasant evenings — perfect for walking the Corniche, exploring Al-Balad and Red Sea trips. December-February is coolest.
April and October are warm shoulder months (30-35°C). May to September is hot and humid (35-40°C with high humidity from the Red Sea) — Umrah pilgrims still travel year-round, but tourists are more comfortable in winter.
Plan around the Hajj period (which moves about 11 days earlier each year on the Gregorian calendar) — Mecca and Madinah are at capacity and tourist visas may be restricted in the lead-up. Ramadan transforms Jeddah at night, with Al-Balad coming alive after iftar and special Tarawih prayers at every mosque.
Top things to do
Al-Balad (Historic Jeddah) — UNESCO old town with restored coral-stone merchant houses, traditional souks (Souq Al-Alawi for spices, Souq Bedouin for jewellery), and atmospheric alleys best explored on foot at golden hour. Tyibat Museum captures the history.
Jeddah Corniche — 30 km of seafront promenade with parks, the King Fahd Fountain (the world's tallest at 312 m), and dozens of outdoor cafes. Jeddah Waterfront is the modern, family-friendly section.
King Abdullah Sports City and Boulevard Jeddah — entertainment districts with concerts, attractions and dining.
Red Sea diving and snorkelling — the Red Sea coast offers some of the world's best coral reefs. Day trips run out of Jeddah and Obhur Creek.
Floating Mosque (Al-Rahma Mosque) — beautifully positioned on the Red Sea, a serene spot at sunset.
Day trip to Taif — the cool mountain town two hours away, famous for rose-water production and orchards. Many Indian visitors also undertake Umrah from Jeddah; the Haramain high-speed rail connects Jeddah to Madinah in two hours.
How to get there — flights from India
Jeddah is among the most-connected international destinations from India because of Umrah and Hajj traffic. Saudia, Air India, IndiGo, Air India Express, SpiceJet and flynas all operate. Typical corridors:
Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi, Kozhikode, Lucknow, Kolkata and many smaller cities have direct flights. Round-trip fares run ₹20,000-45,000, spiking during Ramadan and Hajj season. Umrah-package fares often include flights.
Visa for Indian passport holders
Indians have two routes. The Saudi tourist e-Visa (visa.visitsaudi.com) costs SAR 535 (around ₹12,000) for one-year multiple entry, with up to 90-day stays per visit. It allows tourism, business, family visits and — importantly — Umrah year-round outside the Hajj period.
For dedicated Umrah, your accredited Umrah operator in India arranges the visa through the Nusuk platform — usually bundled with flight and hotel packages. Hajj quotas are allocated annually by the Haj Committee of India and the Ministry of Minority Affairs.
Visa-on-arrival is now also available for holders of valid US, UK and Schengen visas. Live updates are in the Visas guide.
Where to stay
Al-Balad / Bab Makkah area — closest to the old town, walking distance to historic sites and traditional souks. Mix of budget and mid-range hotels; popular with Umrah pilgrims.
Corniche / Al Shati — beachfront hotels with Red Sea views; Park Hyatt, Rosewood, Waldorf Astoria operate here.
Al Hamra and Tahlia Street — central, with malls (Red Sea Mall, Mall of Arabia), restaurants and 4-star hotels.
Near JED airport — useful for early flights or onward connections to Mecca via car or Haramain train. Movenpick and Hilton operate here.
For Umrah, most pilgrims base in Mecca near the Haram (Hilton Suites, Swissotel, Pullman) and travel between Mecca and Madinah by car or train.
Budget hotels in Jeddah start ₹3,500/night, mid-range 4-stars ₹6,500-12,000, beachfront luxury ₹18,000+. Halal food is universal (it's Saudi Arabia); pure-vegetarian Indian restaurants are abundant — Saravana Bhavan, Naivedyam, Bombay Chowpatty, plus countless smaller Pakistani-Indian eateries.
Frequently asked questions
Do Indians need a visa for Saudi Arabia / Jeddah?
Yes — apply for the Saudi tourist e-Visa online (SAR 535, around ₹12,000) for one-year multiple entry with 90-day stays. Umrah visas are arranged through accredited Umrah operators in India. Visa-on-arrival is also available with valid US/UK/Schengen visas.
Can I do Umrah on a tourist visa?
Yes — since 2019, the Saudi tourist e-Visa allows Umrah year-round, except during the Hajj period (when only Hajj-visa holders can enter Mecca). You can perform Umrah and combine it with tourism in Jeddah, Riyadh, AlUla and other cities.
Is Jeddah open to non-Muslim Indian tourists?
Yes — Jeddah and most of Saudi Arabia is open to all tourists. Only Mecca and Madinah are restricted to Muslims. Al-Balad, the Corniche, Red Sea trips and AlUla are open to everyone.
What is the best time for Umrah from India?
Outside Ramadan, fares and crowds are lower from May to August despite the heat. Ramadan is spiritually rich but the most crowded and expensive. Avoid the Hajj period unless you are a Hajj pilgrim.
How far is Mecca from Jeddah airport?
About 85 km — 75-90 minutes by car. The Haramain high-speed rail also connects Jeddah to Mecca in 35 minutes and to Madinah in 2 hours, an excellent option for pilgrims.
