Riyadh travel guide for Indians — flights, hotels, things to do, tour packages
Riyadh is Saudi Arabia's capital and economic engine — a fast-growing desert metropolis of over seven million that has transformed itself in five years from a closed-off business destination into a serious tourist city. The Saudi e-Visa opened the country in 2019, and Riyadh now offers everything from the Edge of the World cliffs and the UNESCO-listed Diriyah heritage site to gleaming new entertainment districts, world-class museums and Formula E races. For Indian visitors, it is a 4-hour flight, a substantial Indian working community, and a city changing faster than almost any other in the world.

About Riyadh
Riyadh sits in the heart of the Najd plateau and has historically been more conservative than coastal Jeddah. Today it is a sprawling, modern city with a skyline punctuated by the iconic Kingdom Centre tower (with its skybridge), Al Faisaliah, and the rising King Abdullah Financial District. Vast new entertainment zones, restaurants, cinemas and concerts have transformed the city since 2019.
For Indian travellers, Riyadh is straightforward — English works in international hotels, malls and most restaurants, while Urdu and Hindi are spoken everywhere by the large South Asian community. Indians work across business, healthcare and engineering sectors. The dress code in Riyadh is more conservative than Jeddah — visitors should dress modestly in public, though abayas are not legally required for women. Restaurants no longer need separate family and singles sections.
Best time to visit
November to March is the only sensible window, with daytime temperatures of 18-25°C, cool desert nights and bright, dry skies. December-February evenings can drop to 8-12°C — carry a jacket for desert trips.
The annual Riyadh Season festival (October-March) is when the city is most alive — concerts, sporting events, food festivals, fireworks and pop-up entertainment districts (Boulevard Riyadh City, Boulevard World) attract millions of visitors. Formula E and the Saudi Cup horse race also fall in this window.
April and October are warm shoulder months (28-35°C). May to September is brutal — Riyadh routinely hits 42-46°C with bone-dry desert heat. Indoor attractions still work, but outdoor exploration is impractical. Avoid the Hajj period if travelling for non-pilgrimage purposes.
Top things to do
Edge of the World (Jebel Fihrayn) — dramatic 300-metre cliffs in the desert about 90 minutes from Riyadh, offering one of the most cinematic views in the country. Sunset is unmissable. Go with a tour or 4x4 — the last stretch is unpaved.
Diriyah — UNESCO World Heritage site and the original home of the Saudi royal family. The restored mud-brick At-Turaif district is beautifully lit at night; the surrounding Bujairi Terrace is an upscale dining destination.
National Museum of Saudi Arabia — excellent introduction to the kingdom's history, prehistory and Islamic heritage. Adjacent Murabba Palace and the Masmak Fortress complete the historical circuit.
Kingdom Centre Sky Bridge — observation deck on the 99th floor offering 360-degree city views. Sunset is best.
Boulevard Riyadh City and Boulevard World — vast Riyadh Season entertainment zones with restaurants, shows, attractions and themed districts (Boulevard World takes you through pavilions of different countries including India).
Souq Al Zal — traditional Bedouin market for daggers, jewellery, antiques and oud.
Day trips include the rock art at Jubbah, and onward to AlUla — Saudi's flagship tourism destination with Nabataean tombs at Hegra (just 1h flight from RUH).
How to get there — flights from India

Diplomatic Quarter (DQ) — leafy embassy district with upscale hotels and good security. Quieter, less central.
King Abdullah Financial District (KAFD) — the new business district with luxury hotels (Mandarin Oriental, Hyatt Regency); modern but still developing.
Diriyah / Bujairi Terrace — boutique stays for the historic experience; new luxury resorts opening as part of Diriyah's mega-development.
Near RUH airport — Sofitel and Marriott options useful for early flights.
Budget hotels start ₹3,500/night, 4-star mid-range ₹6,500-11,000, luxury ₹16,000+. Halal food is universal; vegetarian Indian options are abundant — Saravana Bhavan, Maharaja, Bombay Brasserie and many Karnataka/Kerala/Hyderabadi eateries. Tea-houses in Olaya cater to the Indian community.
