Kailash Mansarovar Pilgrimage via Lhasa (Tibet) day-by-day itinerary (14N/15D)

Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu

Fly into Kathmandu, where you are met and transferred to your hotel. Settle in and complete yatra briefings and permit formalities. If time allows, visit the Pashupatinath temple. Rest well, as the journey ahead is physically demanding and begins the acclimatisation process.

Day 2: Kathmandu preparations

A day in Kathmandu for final preparations, paperwork and medical checks, and to gather any last supplies for the high-altitude journey. Visit nearby temples such as Pashupatinath or Boudhanath if time permits. Rest and hydrate well before flying into Tibet tomorrow.

Day 3: Fly to Lhasa

Fly from Kathmandu to Lhasa, the high-altitude capital of Tibet (around 3,650 m). The rest of the day is for gentle acclimatisation — avoid exertion, drink plenty of water and rest. The altitude is already significant, so taking it slow from the outset is important.

Day 4: Lhasa, Potala Palace

Acclimatise further in Lhasa with a visit to the magnificent Potala Palace, the former winter residence of the Dalai Lamas, and the sacred Jokhang Temple with its pilgrim-thronged Barkhor circuit. Keep activity moderate to help your body adjust to the thin air.

Day 5: Lhasa to Shigatse

Begin the overland journey, driving across the Tibetan plateau to Shigatse, Tibet's second city. En route, take in the vast high-altitude landscapes. On arrival, visit the great Tashilhunpo monastery, seat of the Panchen Lama. Rest at altitude in preparation for the days ahead.

Day 6: Shigatse to Saga

Continue driving westward across the plateau to Saga, a remote outpost on the route to Mansarovar. It is a long day on the road through stark, beautiful high country. Check in and rest, continuing to acclimatise and conserve energy for the sacred lake and the kora to come.

Day 7: Saga to Lake Mansarovar

Drive on towards holy Lake Mansarovar, one of the highest freshwater lakes in the world, with the first views of Mount Kailash in the distance. On arrival, take darshan and perform rituals by the sacred waters. Rest at the lakeside, awed by the spiritual landscape.

Day 8: Mansarovar parikrama and Darchen

Spend time at Lake Mansarovar with a parikrama (circuit) of the holy lake and prayers by its shores at sunrise. Later, transfer to Darchen, the base town for the Kailash kora. Rest and make final preparations with your yak and porter support for the three-day circumambulation.

Day 9: Kailash parikrama, day 1

Begin the sacred Kailash kora, trekking from Darchen to Dirapuk with the towering north face of Mount Kailash in view. It is a strenuous high-altitude day; pace yourself, use the porter and yak support, and follow your doctor's guidance. Overnight at Dirapuk beneath the holy peak.

Day 10: Kailash parikrama, day 2

The hardest and most sacred day, crossing the Dolma La pass (over 5,600 m) past the Gauri Kund, then descending to Zuthulpuk. The thin air makes for very slow progress, so go steadily, rest often and rely on the oxygen and support team. Overnight at Zuthulpuk after the great pass.

Day 11: Kailash parikrama, day 3, to Mansarovar

Complete the final, easier stretch of the kora back towards Darchen, finishing the sacred circuit of Mount Kailash. Reflect on the achievement, then transfer towards Lake Mansarovar or Saga as you begin the return journey across the plateau. Rest after the demanding trek.

Day 12: Return towards Saga

Begin the long overland return, driving back across the Tibetan plateau towards Saga, retracing the high-country route. Rest and recover from the kora as the altitude gradually decreases. Overnight at Saga, with the most strenuous part of the pilgrimage now behind you.

Day 13: Saga towards the border

Continue the drive back across Tibet towards the Nepal border region, with the descent bringing thicker air and easier breathing. Take in the dramatic plateau scenery one last time. Overnight near the border or en route, ready to cross back into Nepal the next day.

Day 14: Return to Kathmandu

Cross the border and travel back to Kathmandu, leaving the high plateau behind. Check in and rest, perhaps reflecting on the journey over a relaxed dinner. There may be time for some last shopping for souvenirs before the flight home tomorrow.

Day 15: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Kathmandu airport for your return flight home, completing the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. Allow time for transfers and formalities after the long expedition.
