Amarnath via Pahalgam Traditional Trek day-by-day itinerary (7N/8D)
Day 1: Arrival in Srinagar
Fly into Srinagar, where you are met and transferred to your hotel or houseboat. Settle in and rest after the journey. Your operator confirms the yatra registration, RFID and trek logistics, and you can enjoy a gentle shikara ride on Dal Lake in the evening.
Day 2: Srinagar to Pahalgam
Drive to Pahalgam, the traditional base for the Amarnath trek, set in a scenic valley on the Lidder river. Check in and rest, keeping activity light to acclimatise. Prepare your trekking essentials and warm clothing for the demanding days ahead on the mountain route.
Day 3: Trek Chandanwari to Sheshnag
Transfer to Chandanwari and begin the trek, climbing the steep Pissu Top and continuing along the mountain trail to the camp at Sheshnag, beside a high alpine lake (ponies arranged). It is a tough first day at altitude. Settle into the camp with full board and langar support for the night.
Day 4: Trek Sheshnag to Panchtarni
Continue the trek over the high Mahagunas Pass and down to the camp at Panchtarni, where five streams meet. The thin mountain air makes for slow going, so pace yourself and stay hydrated. Rest at the Panchtarni camp with full board, ready for the cave darshan tomorrow.
Day 5: Amarnath cave darshan
An early start for the final stretch from Panchtarni to the Amarnath cave for darshan of the naturally formed ice-lingam, the climax of the yatra. After taking blessings, descend and return towards Panchtarni or Sheshnag camp for the night, depending on timing and conditions.
Day 6: Trek down to Pahalgam
Complete the descent along the trek route back towards Chandanwari and drive to Pahalgam. It is a long day on the trail, so take it steadily. Check in at Pahalgam and rest, enjoying the comfort of a hotel and the valley scenery after the demanding mountain camps.
Day 7: Return to Srinagar
Drive back to Srinagar, with a possible stop at the saffron fields of Pampore or the Mughal gardens. Enjoy a relaxing shikara ride on Dal Lake and some last shopping for Kashmiri handicrafts before your final night in the valley.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, transfer to Srinagar airport for your return flight home, completing the traditional Amarnath trek yatra. Allow time for the drive and airport formalities.
