Sri Lanka Grand Wildlife — Yala, Wilpattu, Sigiriya day-by-day itinerary (8N/9D)

Day 1: Arrival in Colombo

Fly into Colombo, clear immigration and transfer to your hotel. Settle in after the journey and take an easy first evening, perhaps along the seafront at Galle Face Green. Rest up before the grand circuit through the Cultural Triangle, hills, wildlife parks and coast begins.

Day 2: Colombo to Sigiriya

Drive to Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle, with a possible stop en route. On arrival or the next morning, visit the Dambulla Royal Cave Temple, a UNESCO site filled with Buddha statues and murals beneath a rock overhang. Check in near Sigiriya and rest, ready for the Lion Rock climb.

Day 3: Sigiriya Lion Rock and Polonnaruwa

Climb the iconic Sigiriya Lion Rock, an ancient fortress-palace atop a sheer monolith, passing the frescoes and the giant lion's paws (a strenuous stair ascent rewarded with sweeping views). Later, explore the ruins of the medieval capital Polonnaruwa, ideally by bicycle. Overnight near Sigiriya.

Day 4: Minneriya safari, transfer to Kandy

Take a jeep safari in Minneriya National Park, famed for the seasonal Gathering of elephants around the reservoir (best in the dry months). Afterwards drive to Kandy, stopping at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage. In Kandy, visit the sacred Temple of the Tooth, and check in for the night.

Day 5: Kandy to Nuwara Eliya

Drive up into the central highlands to Nuwara Eliya through scenic tea plantations. Visit a tea factory for the process and a tasting, and stroll by Gregory Lake in the cool, colonial-flavoured hill town. Check in and enjoy the crisp mountain air for the night.

Day 6: Nuwara Eliya to Yala, evening safari

Descend from the hills to Yala and check in near the park. In the late afternoon, take your first jeep safari into Yala, renowned for its leopards as well as elephants, sloth bears, crocodiles and birdlife. Return to your lodge for dinner and an overnight stay near the reserve.

Day 7: Yala safari, transfer to Bentota

Take an early-morning jeep safari into Yala, the best time to spot leopards and other wildlife in the scrub and lagoons. After breakfast, drive to the west-coast resort of Bentota. Check in and relax on the beach in the afternoon, enjoying the shift from heritage and jungle to coast.

Day 8: Bentota beach and Madu River

A relaxed day in Bentota. Take a boat safari on the Madu River through mangrove channels and past small islands and temples, watching for birds and monitor lizards. Spend the rest of the day on the beach or by the pool, with optional watersports, before a final coastal evening.

Day 9: Departure

After breakfast, transfer from Bentota to Colombo airport for your return flight home, completing the grand Sri Lanka heritage, wildlife and beach tour. Allow time for the coastal drive and airport formalities.
