Switzerland with Glacier Express day-by-day itinerary (7N/8D)
Day 1: Arrival in Zurich
Arrive in Zurich and transfer to your hotel. Collect your first-class Swiss Travel Pass and spend the evening exploring the old town, the Bahnhofstrasse and the lakefront at a relaxed pace before the rail journeys begin.
Day 2: Zurich to St Moritz via Bernina
Travel towards the Engadine, joining the Bernina Express, the highest railway crossing of the Alps, with its glaciers, viaducts and the famous Brusio spiral. Arrive in glamorous St Moritz, set among lakes and peaks. Overnight in St Moritz.
Day 3: St Moritz at leisure
A day to enjoy St Moritz and the Engadine. Options include the lakeside promenade, a local mountain railway for alpine views, or simply soaking up the resort's polished atmosphere. A relaxed day between the big train rides.
Day 4: Glacier Express to Zermatt
Board the Glacier Express with a reserved seat for one of the world's most scenic rail routes, winding past gorges, alpine meadows and the Oberalp Pass. Arrive in car-free Zermatt beneath the Matterhorn. Overnight in Zermatt.
Day 5: Gornergrat and Zermatt
Ride the Gornergrat cog-wheel railway to a panoramic ridge facing the Matterhorn and surrounding 4,000-metre peaks. The rest of the day is free to wander Zermatt's pedestrian streets and enjoy the mountain setting. Overnight in Zermatt.
Day 6: Zermatt to Interlaken and Jungfraujoch
Travel to Interlaken and take the cog-wheel train to Jungfraujoch, the Top of Europe, for the Sphinx deck, Ice Palace and glacier views, weather permitting. Return to Interlaken between its two lakes for the night.
Day 7: Interlaken to Lucerne
Journey to Lucerne, perhaps via a scenic route, and take a guided walk of the old town with its Chapel Bridge, Water Tower and Lion Monument. A Lake Lucerne stroll or short cruise can round off the day. Overnight in Lucerne.
Day 8: Departure
After breakfast, transfer to the airport for your return flight. If time permits, a final lakeside walk in Lucerne or a stop in Zurich en route makes a fitting end to the rail journey.
