Day 1: Fly into Paro
Arrive on the scenic Druk Air flight into Paro, banking between the peaks on one of aviation's most thrilling landings. Meet your guide and check in. Spend a relaxed afternoon visiting the riverside Paro Rinpung Dzong and the watchtower museum, easing into the altitude.
Day 2: Tiger's Nest hike
Tackle the trip's centrepiece early: the climb to Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery perched on a cliff high above the valley. The two-to-three-hour ascent has a cafeteria rest point and optional ponies partway. Return to Paro in the afternoon to recover.
Day 3: Paro to Thimphu
A short, easy drive to the capital. Tour Thimphu's main sights, the Memorial Chorten, the giant Buddha Dordenma, and Tashichho Dzong, with time for the takin preserve or the market. Your guide adds depth on Bhutanese customs and Buddhism.
Day 4: Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula
Cross the 3,100-metre Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and possible Himalayan views (weather permitting), descending into the warmer Punakha valley. Visit the magnificent Punakha Dzong at the river confluence and walk the long suspension bridge over the Po Chhu.
Day 5: Punakha to Thimphu
A relaxed morning in Punakha, perhaps a short walk to the fertility temple of Chimi Lhakhang through the fields, before driving back over Dochula to Thimphu for any final sights and souvenir shopping. Overnight in the capital or Paro depending on your flight timing.
Day 6: Depart from Paro
Transfer to Paro for your Druk Air return flight, with a final chance for valley photographs before checking in for the scenic departure out of the mountains.
