Day 1: Arrive Phuentsholing
Arrive at the border town of Phuentsholing and complete permit formalities with your guide. Settle into your hotel and visit the colourful Zangto Pelri Lhakhang and the lively border market in the evening before an early rest ahead of the mountain ascent.
Day 2: Drive to Thimphu
Climb from the plains into the Himalaya on a roughly six-hour drive through forested switchbacks, stopping for tea and views. Reach the capital in the afternoon, check in, and take a short orientation walk to begin acclimatising to the altitude.
Day 3: Thimphu sightseeing
A full city day taking in the Memorial Chorten, the giant Buddha Dordenma, and Tashichho Dzong, plus the takin preserve or weekend market as time allows. Your guide introduces Bhutan's living Buddhist traditions and its Gross National Happiness philosophy.
Day 4: Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula
Cross the 3,100-metre Dochula Pass with its 108 chortens and possible Himalayan panorama (weather permitting), descending into the subtropical Punakha valley. Visit the riverside Punakha Dzong and walk the long suspension bridge over the Po Chhu before overnighting.
Day 5: Punakha to Phobjikha valley
Drive into the glacial Phobjikha valley, a broad U-shaped basin ringed by forest. Visit the 17th-century Gangtey Monastery and the Black-necked Crane Information Centre, then walk part of the gentle Gangtey Nature Trail through the wetlands. Crane sightings are most likely from late autumn to winter.
Day 6: Phobjikha to Paro
A long but scenic drive back west over Dochula towards Paro, arriving in the afternoon. Rest and prepare for tomorrow's hike, with an early evening to acclimatise and enjoy a Bhutanese dinner.
Day 7: Tiger's Nest hike, depart Paro
Climb to the cliff-hanging Taktsang, the Tiger's Nest monastery, on a two-to-three-hour ascent with a cafeteria rest point and optional ponies partway. After descending and a final photo stop at Paro Dzong, transfer for your onward departure.
